Best way to travel from SDC to Bilbao after Camino

I hired a car in Santiago and left it at Bilbao airport.

Camino de Pennine Way! And we're off .....

The PW is my local LDP, I completed it 15-18 years ago - it's a fine route. I think you'll be fine wild / stealth camping. Remember: Leave No Trace....but do have fun!

    Buying a paper map

Have a look at Michelin Road Maps 'Regional Espania'. The scale isn't great at 1cm: 4km, but I found them very helpful when trying to look at the bigger picture - especially when doing the Via de La Plata last year. The Caminos aren't marked, but if you also have a guide book you'll be fine. If...

Vdlp pack transport and shoes recommended

Hoka shoes do seem to have a good reputation.

A camino aborted (or maybe completed) plus bonus toe question

Well done on your achievements - and they ARE achievements, don't ever think otherwise. Long distance walking, whether on a Camino or not, is a wonderful way think through problems and to come to terms with situations that you've been struggling with....it works for me! Re: footwear. This year I...

    Santiago Tart

I've been back from Santiago de Compostela for around 3 weeks, in that time I've made 4 Tarte Santiago....yum!

    The Pipers

They're wonderful and a part of the local traditional music scene - to be encouraged. It's such a shame that England so often turns it's back on it's rich music, song and dance traditions, unlike Scotland, Ireland and Wales - and Galicia of course.

    Tissue Paper

Take a trowel, dig a hole (well away from watercourses), do your business in the hole, refill hole, pack out the toilet paper. Simples.

    Sello requirements from Ourense

Thanks everyone! I'm managing to get 2 per day so far: last day tomorrow!

    Sello requirements from Ourense

I'm on final approach to Santiago de Compostela, currently in Ourense. Can anyone clarify if I need TWO sellos per day from here to the end, or will one per day be enough? I leave around 5 - 6am each day, there are few people around at that time to stamp my credencial! Many thanks :-)

    Walking poles through airport security?

I brought poles in my carry-on pack on Ryanair, Manchester to Madrid in April. No problem getting them INTO Spain but they were confiscated on leaving Spain. Now back in Spain, with poles - this time they're in hold luggage so no problem.

    Shorts OK?

I'm currently at Vilar do Barrio on the Via de la Plata, wearing a kilt.

via de la Plata GPS track file

Is there an up to date GPX file for the Via de la Plata? I'm restarting the route this week from just west of A Gudina.

    Mochilla service campaign

    I agree absolutely!

    Collapsible poles allowed on BA?

We had no problem flying out to Madrid with our poles in our packs (carry-on) but on the return flight from Madrid they were confiscated: 'This is not allowed in Spain'. We had the opportunity to have them sent as hold bacggage but it was Ryanair and their charges would have exceeded the cost of...

    Suddenly solo on the VdlP

I'm sure you'll be more than capable of doing VdLP solo. It's a lovely route and is eminently 'do-able'. Personally I prefer the less busy / less frantic VdLP to the busier French route.....but that's just me. You'll almost certainly slot in with walkers of a similar ability to yours. Don't do...

Specific hot spots for blister. Looking for suggestions...

I strongly recommend using dressing material 'K-Soft K4'. It's available from chemists / pharmacies - although they may have to order it in for you, it's ridiculously cheap! To use: Cut a piece sufficiently large to cover the problem area twice-over. Double the piece over and cover the problem...
