On a recent trip to Austria, I was out walking just north west of Innsbruck, and came across waymarkings for the Jakobsweg. The signs were new, and the route appeared to run south from Mittenwald in Germany, and on into the Inn valey before, presumably, making it's way into Switzerland.
On...
We are starting from Le Puy in a few weeks time, so am interested to hear any other tips on this subject too! We always carry some spare food "just in case" and are aware that shop opening times are often limited (and possibly unreliable). The idea of "buy own breakfast, buy own lunch and book...
I walked it in 2014 and it was really no problem.
In fact, I'd go as far as to say it was not the worst walking of the Camino - I can think of a couple of sections that I personally found less agreeable.
I think this would be really interesting. I came across a short section of the Jakobsweg in souther Germany / northern Austria running south and west from Mittenwald, and it really started to pique my interest - only to find, when checking later, that there was very little information available...
Interesting decision whether to go for Goretex or other waterproof lined boots or non-lined boots. Obviously, waterproof is a boon for some (and I'd include myself in that - one of my most uncomfortable days walking came about after wet feet) but in some cases, the lower breathability of lined...
It sounds as though you are having a wonderful time - and that is what matters. Speed is really irrelevant - if that was all that mattered, millions of pilgrims would be in trouble! :D
Stick to what suits you - and continue having a wonderful time.
Buen Camino!
I keep a blog - have done for a while - which features Caminos and other walking stuff.
There are several reasons why I started it. Sure, I wanted to have something to look back on in my dotage, and something that my parents could look at now they are in theirs and can't travel any more.
But...
Is there a general reason why all the types you've tried are not comfortable, or is it a variety of reasons? There is a huge choice out there, and a bit more info on the actual problem would help in narrowing the field. For example, are you trying to buy the same size as your normal shoe size...
I've used boots on previous pilgrimages - Brasher fabric boots - which were OK in the main. I mainly used them because a) they were quite comfortable, b) quite light, c) because I had them already!
This year, I'll be using Merrell Moab Mid GTX's - I had to buy new as my old ones fell apart...
The weaather is likely to be unpredictable, and well-crafted plans may stumble if routes are not open. SJPdP is worth a bit of a look round, so usually the advice is to rest up and prepare and start in good time the next day.
Buen Camino!
As I understood it, the forum allows anyone to express their opinion as long as forum rules are not broken. That includes opinions that are not necessarily traditional, whether we like them or not. And the "trait of elitism" that surfaces from time to time isn't "simply someone expressing an...
Times will always change, and unless we want to suspend the Camino (and most other things) in time and create a museum or theme park, they always will. I, too, would agree change is not always for the best (although often it is) but if you stand there Canute-like trying to stem the tide you will...
Although it goes against the "completist" in me (wanting and having found a way to do SJPdP to Santiago with the time constraints I have), the more I think about this, the more I think I agree with Rebekah.
One of the key features of the Camino, whether done as a pilgrimage or as a walk, is in...
Try not to do this - you'll miss so much if you do. Not from the "scenic" perspective, perhaps (although that is down to personal choice) but because it is an integral part of the journey that should be experienced - if only for a day or two.
We found it one of the most contemplative sections...
We, too, have watched it numerous times.
As has been mentioned, it is a movie, not a documentary, so has taken certain liberties. Besides inconsistencies in the order of locations, it is a romanticised version and cuts out a lot of the less pretty bits that pilgrims encounter.
However, as an...
Here in the UK we have another alternative from Cicerone Press:

I'm not sure how it compares, but it seems OK to me and although not bang up to date is has served well for 3 years.
I guess...
