LIVE from the Camino Santiago to Rome Part 1

They have been so wonderful! And the restaurant at lunchtime with its menu del dia - I am hugely outnumbered by men who seem to be enjoying the solid, plain cooking in good quantities- Given I am Irish it's like many a locals type place at home geared for farmers (minus the mashed potatoes!). In...

LIVE from the Camino Santiago to Rome Part 1

Day 3 Sobrado to Friol on Camino verde Enjoyed staying in the monastery in Sobrado, but was in bed before compline. Cool and breezy but sunnier today so a good day for a walk! The first half I followed the camino norte - it seemed to involve alot of road, or beside the road with a few sections...

LIVE from the Camino Santiago to Rome Part 1

Day 2 - on the Camino Norte- Goimil to Sobrado So 10km on road this morning on the Norte alternative to reach Boimorto...lots of Norte pilgrims having coffee here. Then onwards to the albergue in monastery in Sobrado. Much more manageable numbers of pilgrims giving me strange looks as I walk...

    León to Santiago in September

As its their first day make sure they take the route to Vilar de Mazarife (not the senda beside the main rd which would crush first day spirits).

    Need some new route advice

How about Chemin de Mont St Michel in Brittany in France. The route from Clisson via Nantes and Rennes is easy. Some pilgrim accommodation available on it too.( I did this heading south). Even the Chemin Mont St Michel from Cherbourg has enough accommodation options plus you get to enjoy the sea...

LIVE from the Camino Santiago to Rome Part 1

I have a slightly different plan - I'm going to Logrono and follow Iganciano/Ebro/Catalan caminos to Barcelona. Like pilgrims of old I am going to ship across the sea to Genoa in Italy- (Barcelona-Genoa ferry). I will have a few days on the Via della Costa before joining the VF which has pilgrim...

LIVE from the Camino Santiago to Rome Part 1

So having finished my camino from home over the last 4 years, this morning I set out from Santiago to head to Rome, a project that will probably take another few years! Day 1 Santiago de Compostela to Goimil 31km I headed out in silence from the city. Until I got to Vilamaior I met a handful of...

LIVE from the Camino Santiago Tomorrow to complete camino from home!

Well I made it! A bit dirty and grubby, and definitely emotional! I had such a wonderful time walk on voie de Compostelle on the most western of the routes through France from Mont St Michel down the west coast. I loved the Via Bayona/Basque Interior. I enjoyed the pre- sarria CF and then joined...

    Sarria Complementario alternative

Truthfully I discovered this complementario route after Sarria nearly by accident just before my trip. I found very little info on it. Even on the Frances I think I came across one trail-side map that showed it- not just as an alternative but as of equal standing with the more travelled route...

    Wikiloc or alternative for planning

I have used alltrails to create the trail and then downloaded it to organic maps were I can add in key locations eg shop, bar, water etc. It's a bit cumbersome but it was the best solution I found planning a camino from Ireland. Unfortunately, I don't think there is a way to create a map on a...

    Sarria Complementario alternative

So just leaving Sarria, after crossing the little stone bridge Ponte de Aspera at the train tracks there are 2 mojons pointing different directions. It was fun to watch the confusion of the shiny new Sarria-starting pilgrims seeing 2 options. But I had planned to try the complementario which...

LIVE from the Camino Back on the Via Francigena

Before the VF was marked as a GR, which has quite strict rules, the VF in France was a little more freeform- generally moving between towns but with leeway on the route. I know one forum member forged a route using the canals. I had Raju's older Cicerone guide which had less quibbles about road...

    Hotel Torre de Núñez

The Hotel Torre de Núñez I am thinking of is close to the Via Kunig route just outside Lugo. Its more than 30km away from Ferrerios on the CF (the Sarria to Portomarin section). Using the directions feature on Google maps it's a 30 minute drive. So it I'd well off route and a fair distance to...

    Solo female from ireland

Another Irish solo female walker - the CF has plenty of arrows and other pilgrims. Definitely if you get a chance like Kirkie said call into the Camino Info Centre in Dublin. There are some useful map apps with GPS and the camino route so if you do feel lost

    Cherbourg to Santiago

More than happy to help - you can send me a PM.

    caminos with shorter stages?

I would suggest the Via Bayona/Vasco Interior. It possible to start from Bayonne or from Biarritz train station (the walk between them is okay but urban). The only difficult bit is the day through tunnel in the mountains- but good albergue in Zegama, and either to Zalduondo (need yo bring food)...

Advice sought for wounds on feet from walking

Rest and new shoes! The boots are not working for you - maybe the heat is causing swelling, damp socks (rain or sweat) can also cause issues - I have pair of boots I can wear at home in Ireland but in Spain caused me misery. So it's probably new shoes... and make sure you get your feet out to...
