Zan got to Indonesia by hitching a boat ride across the straits. He’s walked through Flores with wonderful encounters and hospitality extended by the local people who seem to have taken to this young stranger walking through their villages. Lots of First Communion and wedding celebrations; even...
Having just climbed the steep hill out of Punta La Reina to Mañeru I think I may have misled the OP…. I’d either forgotten or my old body is not in good shape!
We carried a tent on the Norte (and associated gear) and hardly used it; sent it on from Gijon . There were two nights when I was grateful for it. The first was at Passajes de San Pedro, when we arrived very late in the day and found the albergue full. The second I was grateful...
I know from friends in the accommodation industry that this can be a problem when transporting linen to and from commerical laundries. They now have to take extra measures to protect the clean linen or use separate vans to either pickup or deliver.
I'd pick the descent from after the Crux de Ferro down through El Acebo, Riego de Ambro and on to Molinasecca as the worst! It is beautiful but steep, goes on for ages, and is rocky. I pick my way down very carefully. There is a road alternative that is much easier but also much longer, and...
You are not alone in finding the descent from the Alto del Perdon difficult. It is not only the slope, but also the rolly, pebbly surface. There is nothing that difficult between Uterga and Logroño, either up or down.
I've got lazy since mobile phones and smartwatches automatically take care of time zones, and plane tickets show departure and arrivals in the local time.
On my first camino when I got to Najera, I walked into a telephone booth (this was the days before mobile phones) and telephoned my brother in Australia, crying my eyes out. "I can't do this" I sobbed. "Yes you can", said he, the athlete who had climbed impossible mountains in the Himalayas...
Mine are from Aldi, in a large size. I watch for when they come on sale. If you are looking online- try searching for "long sleeve T shirts" rather than base layers, and I'd also include the words "relaxed fit" or "loose". I found these - expensive, but you can see they are not tight. A few...
One of my reasons to keep walking the Camino is to practice tolerance, especially as I get older....I really don't want to turn into a COP (cranky old person). If I find myself getting too irritated then it is time for a hotel or a detour onto a solitary path.
I love cashmere, especially next to the skin, but find it does not take kindly to being under a backpack, or being in contact with anything velcro. Think about whether you are happy for your cashmere to be ruined, and maybe substitute with something a bit more robust.
Just impossible to tell. I'm arriving on 8th October and hopefully should be OK whether it is hot or cold. I find long sleeve light merino is bearable even in hot weather, as long as it is loose fitting. But I am throwing in a short sleeve top too.
Caryn, you may cross with Narelle, the mother of the intrepid world walker, Alexander. Narelle is currently walking the Aragonés, and might be a day ahead of you.
