Shikoku 88 temple pilgrimage - New York Times article

I would like to know where you get this information. My friend who has lived in Japan, has a Japanese wife and has skated all over Japan for more than 20 years says this is news to him.

Shikoku 88 temple pilgrimage - New York Times article

I'm in the planning phase for a November Shikoku Pilgrimage. To reduce the time and pounding on the pavement we are going to use inline skates - it looks like 80% is skate-able. Cost-wise my estimates will be about what you would spend on the Camino if you stayed in inexpensive single person...

Help please walking Camino backwards. SJPDP -> Bordeaux

This site has gpx files and other route info (in reverse for you) https://www.longdistancepaths.eu/camino/en/index.php?start=4567&end=885&routenr=5&B1=Startendpoint For finding hostels the booking.com and Hostelworld apps are probably the best.

Where to start with 33 days?

Last October I had a 33 day window, as well. Starting in SJPP I followed a 31 day plan which felt very comfortable to me. The last two days were only 20km each so I did them in one to have more time in SDC. Total 30 days. For me the biggest issue with the tight window was working out the time...

I need to shorten my walk

I was on a 31 day plan but at the end did the last two days in one and still got to the pilgrim office in Santiago by 4pm for a total of 30 walking days. I didn't feel like I rushed it or stressed myself.

    E SIM

To add to this, my Pixel accepts an eSim (GoogleFi - no international plan) and a SIM (I bought an Orange SIM in Spain). With WiFi calling my GoogleFi number worked over the Orange SIM data. This is a really nice bonus of eSIM+SIM. Dual SIM phones are handy

Lost & Found Lost glasses in case between Torres del Rio and Viana

It's a Camino miracle! Reunited! Thank you, all!

Lost & Found Lost glasses in case between Torres del Rio and Viana

I realize this is a long shot but if anyone sees a black and grey glasses case with two sets of glasses in it on the trail pick them up. I'm in Logrono tonight. Bueno Camino!

Oct 1 taxi share from Pamplona airport

Probably a little late but if anyone is on the MAD to Pamplona flight and wants to share a taxi to SJPP, I have one reserved for just after 1pm when the flight lands. I shouldn't be hard to find.

Umbrella for sun and rain - buy good quality (expensive) or just use a cheap one?

The umbrella ended up in the "I might use it category" so it didn't make my packing cut. My goal is to only carry things I absolutely need. I have other things for sun and rain that have other uses.

Umbrella for sun and rain - buy good quality (expensive) or just use a cheap one?

Leaving for Spain in a week and gave umbrellas some thought and came to the decision to buy a cheap one on the Camino if it seemed useful. In previous European visits umbrellas were easy to obtain.

Traveling from western Canada - how far in advance do you book your flights?

Airline prices are all governed by data analytics so there are no guidelines for the best price. There are deals but you cannot predict when those are available. The best you can do is know the prices, keep looking and jump on one when available. There are some sites that look for deals.

Weirdest/Strangest item someone has taken on the Camino

I was watching a hiking video and the guy was making a very convincing argument for bringing a super light folding chair. I gave it a lot of thought because sitting on the ground sucks and getting up is becoming embarrassing. Has anyone seen pilgrims with chairs?

    Muscle cramps & other bits

What I learned from bicycle touring.... Cramps: I've had severe cramp issues all my life and have mostly solved it. Cramps are an electrolyte imbalance and can be caused by over-hydration. Over-hydration is more dangerous than dehydration. Drinking too much water can kill you (one warning...

    E SIM

Makes sense since they need to hold you until the phone is paid off. That's why I always buy the phone outright and unlocked. Check with friends that have teenage+ kids ... likely they have half a dozen old phones lying around that would still cover all your data needs (anybody needing a phone...

    E SIM

If your phone supports dual SIMs and Wi-Fi calling you may be able to use your US number over a local SIM card's data. Earlier this year in Colombia, my Pixel 6 + GoogleFi eSIM (US only plan) + Colombian SIM kept my US number working. This turned out to be quite handy ... other than still...

    Fleece or light rain/wind jacket?

What I've learned from cycle touring is that anything that retains water is bad. One trip my rain jacket was soggy for days ... next trip I upgraded to an expensive shake dry. Layers dry faster and if your clothes can't be reasonably dried rolling in a towel they will stay wet too long.

28L pack on the Camino Frances this October

I'm going in October and using a 24L Osprey pack. No sleeping bag, just a silk liner. No real jacket but several layers. I've learned from cycle touring to take as little as possible, take only what you need and try to find multiple uses for things. With a silk liner, a beach towel and a...

    Bus Pamplona to SJPP

I will be traveling to SJPP October 1 and have found all the same issues you all have found. Even if the bus schedule comes out in a few weeks the timing probably means a night in Pamplona. I am resigned to hiring a taxi from the Pamplona airport 😔
