    Roncesvalles or Burguete?

If you have the energy, go as far as you want. I suspect most pilgrims stop at Roncevalles at the end of that day because they are simply exhausted.

    Getting from Orisson to Roncesvalles

Whichever way you go, use your hiking pokes. No sense in injuring yourself right out of the gate.

Phone Service while traveling - Holafly?

Has anyone used the phone service "Holafly" during their Camino? Apparently it is a phone plan which eliminates the high cost of roaming charges and international phone plans offered from many U.S. phone companies (I'm looking at you, Verizon). It seems to be offered around the world at very...

LIVE from the Camino They are recommending the Valcarlos route tomorrow, how foolish would it be to go Napoleon?

My first Camino was rerouted due to snow in late May. Follow the advice of the pilgrim office. In the past, pilgrims who have ignored the advice and then gotten stuck have had to pay the cost of their rescue. Besides, the Valcarlos is a quite lovely route to take! Why would you NOT want to take it?

    Overcrowded Camino Frances

I just read the news article that you sourced for your post. I am much relieved that I am not the only one distressed by the numbers of people who travel the CF, as pilgrims, with suitcases. Travel the CF! It is a wonderful journey! If you drive, take a bus tour, etc. enjoy the journey...

Unfortunate, but true... I need to skip some sections

My $0.02 - Start walking in SJPDP. You’ve already made some reservations (*sigh*). Continue walking and breathing in your Camino for as long as you can. Stop when you run out of time. Keep your credencia. Return and either pick up where you left off, or start from the beginning again. Don’t...

Iberia, by James Michener, a worthy read before, during, or after a camino

I love his books. Thanks for the reminder to dive into this one, one I’ve overlooked.

Travel woes - trapped in Dubai

Glad to hear that you are, literally, back on track! Buen Camino. It can only get better.

    Rain during Lourdes -> SJPDP

If you are worried about slipping on the path, just make sure you take hiking poles. IMHO, you should take poles anyway.

    La Tuna in Santiago

When I hear the bagpipes and the Tuna, I know I’m in Santiago.

Travel woes - trapped in Dubai

I had forgotten about the catastrophic rainfall recently - where was my head??? I hope you are dry and somewhat comfortable in Madrid - there are worse places to get stranded. What is the airline doing about your packs? Are they going to send them to - where - what hotel? How long do they...

Travel woes - trapped in Dubai

Wow. Very sorry to hear about all this stress so early in your journey! It sounds like you have the absolute right attitude. What is going on in Dubai??

Small juicer, vegetarians and heating element?

What off-hours are you concerned about? Early morning? Late night? My experience was that coffee and tea were always available to me when needed either on the road or near the albergue. I drink ALOT of coffee. Don't be afraid. Are you coming from the U.S.? If so, make sure that your device...

    RIP @annakappa

I’m so sorry to hear this news. She brought comfort and joy, insight and inspiration to so many people. She will be missed and remembered.

Hiking up O Cebreiro in the Rain

    Be not afraid.

    Camino certificate

Yes, bring your credencial with all the stamps needed. If you are now considering coming back to get your Compostella at a later date, why not slow down and enjoy what’s left of your Camino and pick it up again where you left off when you return?

    Capacity of Credencial

Yes, I can’t pass up a great Camino stamp. I got a second credencial and taped them together, also. Impressive when you accordion unfold it.

Route Napoleon closed (April 1, 2024) for a few days, due to weather

This happened to me in May 2013. I walked to Roncesvalles via the ValCarlos that day instead. Quite doable.

    Sun Sleeves?

Ok. Thanks for the response. I don’t think they sound like a big enough advantage for me to use instead of just rolling up/down my sleeves. I’ll stick with my UV 50 tech fabric shirt. The fewer things I have to carry or worry about losing, the happier I am. Have you read about the time my...

    Sun Sleeves?

How are they better than rolling your sleeves up or down if you are wearing a tech fabric shirt? Wouldn’t it just be one more thing to carry and keep track of? Not trying to be snarky, I just want to understand.
