Walking the camino Frances at Christmas and New Year

Hi Richard just started in Astorga last Friday and so far I can confirm that the Albergues in Astorga, Foncebadon and Ponferrada will stay open over Christmas, there is no Albergues open between Foncebadon and Ponferrada but there might be options of CR or Hotel in Molinaseca ... not sure. The...

    Which Osprey backpack?

Perhaps my solution to the 'taking everything out' problem might not be for you but here it goes: All my belongings are sorted into 6 bags 1) sleeping bag + PJs (or what passes for them) + bedbug sheet - in dry bag 2) clothes - in dry bag 3) other e.g. chargers, journal etc - dry bag 4) wash...

    Masses Along the Way?

I'm not catholic and I went to mass several times without a problem, I just look at others and copy if there are parts that are different to my usual service ... in general i found churches very open and welcoming to all denominations attending.

    Masses Along the Way?

O'Cebreiro - 6pm, very nice and they come around before mass to ask the nationalities and then try and have different parts in respective languages while there is a multilingual screen at the same time

    Irish people: flights to Biarritz.

Hi Jordan, I guess the cheapest way would be to walk ;) but as mentioned above, city bus from airport to Bayonne train station €1 (Thanks Ingrid for the price update!) and then the train to St Jean (last time I checked for € 9.60) ... very reasonable I think. Buen Camino Andrea

    Irish people: flights to Biarritz.

Hi David, hope you have a great time in May! Just thought I would add that there is no need for a taxi to Bayonne (unless you might risk missing the train) ... there is a city bus from the airport directly to the train station and it only costs 2 euro (if I remember correctly). Just ask at the...

How many pilgrims walk the whole way, with their packs, and does it really matter?

Why should anyone think less of people taking the bus, send their packs ahead etc? In many cases it shows good judgement, people decide to adjust to their circumstances rather then risk needing an ambulance or having to abandon their pilgrimage. I guess we have all met people with superior...

Flashing lights for winter (or high vis strips)

As I will be starting out next week and bought 2 lightweight (30g) LED lights that I'll attach to my hiking poles, white in front / red behind so I'll look like a vehicle of some sort , my backpack cover is yellow/reflective in any case so there should be no problem. In front I also have a...

osprey aura 50 vs osprey sirrus 36

I have a Ospray Talon 44 too and like they guys before I absolutely love it and the bit of spare room came in handy for extra food (and the shopping trip in Santiago ) The size you will need also depends on your physiology, I have a very long upper body and even the long verson of...

Guide books - and the sour taste they leave

Going into Burgos seems to be a hell regardles of the route o_O ... i took the grey route and it covered nearly 3 hours of industrial / suburbs but I guess at least it wasn't waterlogged!

Smart Packing and Unexpected Backpack Items

I have very long hair and it's curly and frizzy ... the bane of my life! I should have mentioned that I bring 2 towels, 1 slightly larger one that can serve as a turban after I wash my hair. As regards to shampoo / conditioner ... I bring a good, non chemical, olive oil soap and you would be...

Guide books - and the sour taste they leave

I'm not suggesting that it is the guide book authors fault (Brierley or any of the others). Guide books are valuable resources and definitely help in the decision making process. I just wanted to illustrate how decisions we as pilgrims and guests in a foreign country make have often severe...

Looking put-together in cities - am I kidding myself?

I generally don't care much what I look like on the camino as long as I feel (semi) clean, it's all you can hope for. However, I once shared a albergue with a japanese girl who, i kid you not, brought out a black pencil skirt, white frilly blouse ... including a travel iron to spruce up the...

Guide books - and the sour taste they leave

We all start out like this… We buy a guide book, read excitedly about the Camino and its stages and often follow the recommendations about albergues and routes outlined in them because after all the author must know! During my last Camino I decided to ditch the recommendations of the famous...

Walking the camino Frances at Christmas and New Year

Hi Richard, I'll be leaving Astorga on the 20th so I might meet you along the way or in Santiago (depends on how far you walk each day). I have several lists, websites and books about christmas / new year opening times but each one states different opening times and according to what I read on...

    Posting items to Santiago

On my first camino I send things ahead, to the post office not some special service. The essential point seems to inform the person in the post office when you plan to arrive in Santiago (at least aproximate). In my case I send stuff from Pamplona, the guy in the post office told me they would...

    Hotel Paris in Leon

I stayed there too! It's a great hotel and great location and you can book it very cheaply through booking.com a day or 2 in advance (saved me 25 euro!)

    Men in their underwear?

I have met the 'prancing' older male in tiny underwear (usually from a mediterainian country) ... but I can deal with that (i.e. ignore) the three strangest experiances were a) a woman only wearing knickers started shouting at me in rapid Italian (I do not speak Italin!) while waveing her...
