I have been walking the Camino Frances in two week chunks. I walked Roncevalles to Logrono in 2015, Logrono to Burgos in 2014, and skipped ahead to walk Sarria to Santiago in 2015 arriving at the Cathedral for my 70th birthday.
I am ready to return and fill in the gaps. So, what time of year...
After walking Roncevalles to Logrono at age 68 in 2013, Logrono to Burgos in 2014 and Sarria to Santiago in 2015 to be with St. James on my 70th birthday, I want to go back to the Camino and do stretches I haven't walked before. I hope to walk from Burgos to Sahagun in October. The sparseness...
Because of age and general decrepitude, I try to limit my stages to 10-15 km per day. (This is a pilgrimage for me not extreme public penance.) Oviously, I am going to go farther sometimes on the Meseta .
My planning for the post Sahagun days looks like this:
1) Modern Route: Sahagun-El...
In looking at Brierly's notes for my Logrono to Leon segment , I note that there are several places where Brierly suggests alternatives to the main route, mostly to avoid long stretches near highways. So, are these alternatives marked with yellow arrows or shells? I am severely...
After paying way to much for my verizon international coverage last year, I want to use a Spanish SIM card in my iphone for this years Camino phase. Google map directions seem to use a lot of data even if used only in larger cities. Any opinions (opinions on this forum? Who would think? Grin.)...
I will do the second leg of my religious retreat/outdoor adventure/450 mile pub crawl (aka The Camino) , from Logrono to Leon , to mark the occasion of my seventieth year starting mid-September. As part of my over planning I try to identify hostals/private albergues where I can get a private...
As I started to plan walking from Logrono, I saw a reference to grape stomping , for wine, in Logrono around the festival of San Mateo, September 21. Anybody have any information about this?
Can just anybody do the stomping? Could be another entry on my bucket list... Grin.
Because of a back issue, I will need to use baggage transport for some of my "stuff". Backpack is at 14.5 lbs. BEFORE water but I seem to do much better at 8 lbs before water so I will use transport.
The mechanism for Jacotrans has me confused. WHEN do I have to let them know where I will be...
I have an airline ticket arriving in Madrid on Sunday October 6. Earlier I had determined to take Cercanias from Barajas T4 to Puerta de Atocha to catch a Renfe train to Pamplona. But Puerta de Atocha seems to have disappeared from the schedule!!!
I think I remember that there is construction...
It must be all the threads on relieving oneself on the Camino. I find myself worrying about the five or six hours on an ALSA bus from Madrid to Pamplona. So, do ALSA buses have a bathroom or do they make stops long enough for the gringa abuela to find el banos?
Anybody had any experience treating soft Tyvek with pyrethrin to keep the bed bugs from biting? I got two yards today with the thought of putting it under/around my sleeping bag liner, for additional warmth if needed ,and for protection from night time crawlers.
The material seems like the bug...
I am struggling to reduce my pack weight. My rain strategy is getting much attention.
I am committed to a lightweight rain jacket (6.5 oz and useful for windbreaker and warmth) and rain pants(8 oz. and not breathable but cheaper and, heh, I don't expect to us the pants except on the Camino)...
Coming from the land of 24-7 malls, I am trying to adjust to a more civilized culture. If I arrive in SJPP on a Sunday, will anything be open? Pilgrim Office? Restaurants? Any shops serving last minute peregrino needs or nerves? Most places open on Mondays? Thx.
I am doing conditioning walks to prepare for a Spring 2014 Camino. In the mid-Atlantic USA heat and humidity, I am getting a rash on my ankles and tops of my feet. I think it is prickly heat and seems to be limited to area under my mid weight hiking socks. Anybody else finding this and, more...
I have the Brierly guide in hand as I begin planning for a late October Camino. I think I need to use the Valcarlos route SJPP to Roncevalles. So how well marked is this alternate route? Brierly's directions don't give a lot of confidence I will arrive where I want to be since I am severely...
OK, OK I get "going with the flow" and just letting the Camino unfold at its own, and your, pace. BUT how have other North Americans, and the Aussies, scheduled return air reservations? In planning for a Spring 2014 Camino I don't want to be stuck with a schedule but I also don't want a lot of...
I hope there are no dumb questions...
When I started planning a camino, many years and several sizes after last owning suitable gear/clothing, shopping was clearly in order.
Off to REI. I tried on many shirts. So many vents and zippers. A zippered pocket there? Have they looked at women's...
