Yes can confirm this is miles easier ( though have not done the downhill route) . It was very quiet.... no other pilgrims and no traffic to speak of, and did wonder at points if it was the right route because it seemed to go on for ages. But it’s fine and takes you to the right destination...
Midges are indeed horrible wee beasties best avoided. But they’re not around all year and there’s a useful website at: smidgeup.com that comes online in spring and is map based showing how good (or bad!) the midges are in a particular area.
It’s on a scale of 1-5 (eg 4 = ‘that’s no mist it’s...
Stunning restoration..... can’t wait to see it in real life. What an incredible undertaking by these talented and dedicated people. Thank you for sharing this with us Ivar. A lovely positive way to end a dreadful year.
Just the thing to cheer up a pretty dreich day here in Edinburgh. A wee dance around the kitchen is recommended.
PS dreich means grey wet and dreary in Scots. A word we use quite a lot 🤓!
So enjoyed this interview. Quite a treat to see and hear the famous man of the camino! Thank you Ivar, a wonderful thing to do in these difficult times.
Hi Binka, I did Tui to Santiago on my own late last October into November. Autumn was a gorgeous time of the year to walk.... enough pilgrims and accommodation was never full though I didn’t stay in albergues.
The others I spoke to had no problem getting into albergues though.
Mostly the...
I agree! I found myself in O Porrino last year where my bag was to be delivered to a recommended pension. TuiTrans called to say the place seemed to be closed- they would leave my stuff at a nearby cafe. Well there’s not a lot of choice of accommodation in O Porrino so I thought I’d go to the...
I used TuiTrans from Tui to Santiago. First class reliable service and very reasonable prices. Nice staff too! When a place I had booked was unexpectedly closed (family death apparently) they called me and then emailed details of where my bag would be left.
Hello
I walked Porto to Santiago last year in two halves. The first in May met quite a few pilgrims and we walked together some of the time. No problems at all. I had to abandon it in Tui with food poisoning 😟 but decided to finish it off in November. Far fewer pilgrims of course but at no...
Yesterday watched a programme on BBC in the UK about guys looking for funding to open new restaurants. One such proposal was called ‘Pilgrim’ based on the camino. One of the three guys involved had walked the Frances and they were looking to recreate foods found along the route in their menu...
Having bought a pricey microfibre towel for first Camino I hated it.... horrible feel....
Just by chance in the pet supplies aisle of the supermarket I spotted a small terry type towel for drying dogs! Great colours too! It is now my camino towel.... very absorbent, light, dries quickly.... and...
Can anyone advise on the best way to get from Vila do Conde to rejoin the Camino Central?
Brierley says not to take the road via Beiriz and proposes the road via Junqueira and Arcos. However the Johnny Walker guide says this route is not well marked so am a bit nervous about getting lost or...
I like toe socks myself and they do seem to help with the seemingly inevitable blister problems.
But, interestingly, I’ve walked a couple of Caminos with an older Swiss friend who swears that the Swiss way is NOT to change your socks at all, just let them dry out!
I was quite sceptical but...
You're right Jim. In four Caminos only met one fellow Scot on the road but did meet Johnny Walker in the old Pilgrim Office -and when I went to buy my compostela tube there was a lovely lady behind the desk from Gullane!
There was certainly enthusiasm for the pilgrimage and Santiago de...
I too was very apprehensive about the Napoleon Route in Sept 2013 and convinced myself to get a lift part way up the road from Express Bouricot. However, looking up at that wonderful scenery from St Jean it just seemed to good to see from inside a car so compromised. Express took my rucksack to...
Leon is far too fabulous a place to miss! The cathedral is outstanding and there are lovely little streets to wander in and stop for a drink or tapa. I started my second leg from there in May but took a bus to Virgen del Camino from the bus station ( located adjacent to the train station) as...
Yes, 'to thine own self be true'. I
found myself waiting in line at the Pilgrim Office for my credential and being quite irritated as behind me was a camino group leader whom I had seen taking a taxi in the last stages. And yes he did get his compostela.
But then I thought that it's not my...
