I just got back from the Camino this week and I would definitely take the detour. The views are quite nice and the path feels great on the feet after all the cobblestones.
Just a note: there are lots of posters up about the detour in the albergues and on poles along the way. Take a second to...
I've had a nylon bag for a while that weighs 50 grams and folds down to a tiny ball that I was planning to take. However, the idea of the UltraSil bag is nice because it's only about an ounce more and keeps your hands free.

@FooteK - I own two Swiss Army knives, one I use everyday (a tiny Classic) and one I use camping (a medium-sized Climber). Both have scissors because I find them the tool I use the most. :)
This is an interesting discussion. I'm taking a brimmed hat for sun/rain. I was also going to take one of the merino wool Buffs since I could use it for layered neck warmth with my fleece (I tend to dislike scarves), or wear it balaclava-style for extra head warmth if April got nippy. I...
@MendiWalker. Well, of course! I didn't particularly think I needed to discuss the why people did it part.
@obinjatoo I won't subject anyone to me in a Speedo, but maybe some light nylon shorts.
Somehow this migrated into a thread about theft. ;)
Back to the original question, I guess I'll go with a ziplock since it sounds (especially from jirit's post) that the shower is simply too small to assume that water resistant nylon will actually keep things dry.
Thanks.
My mental picture is that, when it's time to take a shower, you haul your passport/money/phone plus toiletries plus clean clothes along with you since everything else is a common area. Is this accurate?
If so, my thought was to bring along a small nylon bag I have...
@dougfitz - That last is something I'll look at. Beyond simply being able to look back at the actual walk, geo-tagging photos was another reason I may want a track. If I use my phone as a camera, it tags the pictures automatically. But if I carry a separate point-and-shoot, it doesn't. I'm...
Leaving aside using a smart phone for navigation (I'm comfortable with maps), how does one solve the battery problem? I thought it might be nice to have a track recorded of my actual journey...wrong turns and all.
As an experiment I took a walk today and pulled the SIM to shut off the...
I'm still a bit mind-boggled about the TSA regulations in general. I mean, seriously, if you were bent on personal mayhem, would you rather employ:
An unwieldy 3' long ski pole with the now-standard semi-blunt end, whose removal from the overhead bin would cause every passenger's eyes to be...
First, all I can report is what the TSA has said, not what it actually does. *smile* My sister carried her trekking poles on the plane this September, also. However, I will note that she traveled from Omaha, NE while I would be traveling from Newark, NJ...an entirely different kettle of fish...
I was in Eastern Mountain Sports looking at socks and got to talking with the grizzled gentlemen who worked there. His statement, "Compeed? Naw, never use it. I take some Gorilla Tape [note: if not familiar, it's a heavily reinforced version of duct tape]. I can use it to stick it over a...
Doug - I also own a Victorinox Climber (http://www.swissarmy.com/us/app/product/Swiss-Army-Knives/Category/Outdoor/Climber/53381) but that seemed like possible overkill.
Larry - Good to know.
Espero - The Classic and the Wenger Diplomat are pretty much the same knife except that the former...
I'm going to check my poles and knife in a rigid tube, carry the rest of the gear on. New York TSA can be particularly heinous.
Based on your responses, I'm going with what I've got.
I just finished reading a blog that had the line, "Make sure you bring a good knife."
What constitutes good in this particular instance?
I was planning on bringing my old Swiss Army Classic. It has a 1.25" blade and a pair of scissors for cutting Compeeds or something. Is this entirely...
I'm only a week or so from my decision to do this and I'm starting to realize that...for me...the thing that might need the most training is my mindset. I've led a very sedentary lifestyle for the last few decades so the obvious thing for me was to get moving. So I started walking every day...
@Magwood - My thought is to write once a week until the walk, and then try for once a day. I won't have anything easy to type on (iPad or computer) with me and I don't want to spend my time in Internet cafes (should they exist)...so I plan to use something like the Dragon Dictation app on my...
Thank you all.
@Magwood - Perhaps I'll see you on the road. I'm enjoying reading your blog. I'm starting one of my own, even though it's well in advance of the trip, just to capture feelings of the "process" going on here. I agree with you about hats over rain hoods; I hate the loss of...
Hi. I'm new to this forum, new to the camino, and somewhat inexperienced as a hiker. However, I've decided to walk the camino in April/May of 2014. Since I can only get 2.5-3 weeks off from work, I'm currently planning to do the Camino Portugues from Porto to Santiago.
I'm a bit excited...
