note from the mod: This is Damien’s report on part 1 of his walk, Almería to Granada. With his approval we have merged two separate threads to make one continuous report.
First of all I would like to thank the friends on this forum who pointed me to the Mozarabe for my January Camino. I have...
So I have always enjoyed that big bull on the hill on the Frances. I don't remember where exactly but it's near a wood recycling yard, near the new roadway construction.
Well today, I saw the same thing on the Mozarabe day 1 between Rioja and Santa Fe, while walking on the dried out river...
Like, in the USA, the most popular hikes may require a permit. I know it sounds weird. But it is meant to prevent too many people walking through the wilderness and destroying the landscape.
I scored big time. April 14, it's a good date because it means I get water in the desert and less snow...
So like in Spain, a lot of the towns have multiple names. I think it has to do with local traditional language vs. the national one.
Some examples: On the norte San Sebastián is also Donastia.
On the Frances, O Pedrouzo is also Arca, and O'pino. Or at least that is how it seems to me.
And...
So I had completed the Norte from Irun to Santiago for the 5th time starting in mid September and arriving in mid October 2023. I then hopped on a long train ride / taxi to SJPdP. During the Norte, on the walk, I enjoyed the best weather I've ever enjoyed on that route. I got a tan!
Then, on...
So I am outside, at night, wearing my puffy and my beanie. Been in country for 35 days now. Tonight it's cold. First cold night of fall season, I kinda like wearing my puffy and beanie... but when do the hotel operators turn on the heat?
Days 16 - 17
Ribadesella -> La Isla -> Villaviciosa
40 km - 24.8 miles
I usually do this part in one day but I wanted to go to the beach at La Isla and there was a killer place to stay there so I split it up.
On the way to La Isla I passed one of my favorite murals... in Spanish it reads...
So I am knee deep into the Norte (San Vicente) and loving it. The weather has been the best I've ever enjoyed on the Norte. After this one I'm probably going to Disneyland (Frances, I figure I've got to do it again) but after I'll still have 30 days on the visa. So I could do the Portuguese from...
This may seem like a no brainer, but for Americans, there are considerations...
1) They don't use the same plugs in Spain. They don't even use the same voltage (220 v. 110)
2) The beautiful thing about your standard home charger, even with US style plugs, is that they typically handle the...
I know the question kinda sucks. So earlier this year, on the VDLP, I had a discussion with a Spaniard. We talked about his walking experience. He told me he's walked like 4 caminos but it drives him nuts, sometimes, when he talks to other people, and they claim 5, all from Sarria.
I...
So like some of my most memorable times spent in any place anywhere is enjoying live music. A band, a dude with a guitar, a full on concert. Any suggestions for where to find it on the camino? Now being a walker, I'm not interested in going out at midnight, i realize this may hurt my chances. On...
So like, i have to get this off my chest. On a recent trip on the Camino I discovered Garbanzos. In the USA, they come in a can, in Spain they come in a glass jar. The one's in the USA are stiffer. Like the texture is important. Its like they aren't cooked enough in the USA. In Spain they are...
So with little more to add to the wealth of information offered here, I am thinking we need a good pizza place recommendation list! Would love to see other's thoughts and suggestions...
I have two places:
Arzua (Multiple Caminos including Frances): Il Fornacio - most definitely the best pizza...
OK so I decided like earlier last week to walk the VDLP with no planning. I leave from California in literally 10 days (3/15). But I need to know the best way to get a credencial there (usually Ivar sends me one, but I am not sure I'll have enough time to get it.) Where in Seville, should i...
Hi again friends. I am getting antsy. It's been like 4 months since i was in Spain/Portugual. So as I told my sister (f*** it), i am going to go back. Here's the thing tho, i am looking for suggestions for a route that is appropriate for mid march to mid april. After that there is no doubt I'll...
Hi... anyone out there hear of a perigrino/a losing their money belt today? It was just lying on the path. I am sure someone wants it back. There is no ID inside. I have it and would very happily return it to the rightful owner if they can describe it and it's contents... I am in Pontevedra...
Hi friends. So I am one or two days out of Porto and I soon will have to make a decision... to coastal or central after Porto? I expect to arrive in Porto either Nov 27th or 28th after a very very wet journey from Lisbon on the central route. I'll probably take a rest day in Porto, so my journey...
