    Recent Smelly Pilgrim Test

Wooland. Great brand. I don't think they insist that the item remain unwashed for the 100 days to meet the challenge! But I agree: merino wool clothing works for almost all conditions, doesn't get clammy or stinky as much as other fibers. Walking the Camino Frances in August, I wore (and still...

Sad Day. A very Sad Day.

Thank you, Bradypus: will try for homemade Patxaran this year! Eskerrik asko! (Thank you, in the Basque language.)

    How do you make Patxaran?!

    What brand sports bra?

My choice 7 or 8 years ago was merino wool: stretchy but supportive, the best for sweaty weather, dried overnight. I took 2 with me and alternated. Alas, they (Ibex? Smartwool? Icebreaker? now I don't remember) stopped making my preferred style. I'm keeping my eyes open for an equivalent, so I...

Necessary to book train tickets from Santiago to Madrid in mid-October?

The Renfe site indicates that you must buy the Tarjeta Dorada in person (at stations or travel agents). https://www.renfe.com/es/en/viajar/prepare-your-trip/descuentos/mayores-de-60 Does anyone know if I can purchase a discounted ticket online now (from the U.S.) for the discounted Tarjeta...

LIVE from the Camino Burgos to Leon

I remember the Pancho in Burgos — the same, perhaps? This self-portrait was hanging inside:

Unicycle, electric, as a luggage carrier.

OMG the NOISE...! No thank you!

    Recent tours at Atapuerca...

I visited Atapuerca in fall 2015 and although my Spanish is very VERY rudimentary, I was able to piece together a lot by looking at the informative signs which are presented in several languages. This helped me make a bit of sense of what the guide was showing. That said, I agree with others...

    I'm Off then...OOPS!

I wish you buen camino! Six years ago, like you I left home on August 25, and began walking from SJPDP a couple of days later; I arrived in Santiago early October. It was a wonderful time.

LIVE from the Camino Caminho Nascente from Tavira - Spring 2021

I've spent an early morning catching up on your journey so far; beautifully told! Looking forward to more. It sounds like a great route. Happy trails!

Toilet Paper Alternatives for Camino. . maybe?

In a month on the Camino, I was NEVER so far away that I couldn't find an indoor bathroom with flush toilets. Occasionally I used the Kleenex I carried in my pocket, if the timer-light went out and I couldn't find the toilet paper in the dark. But really, Spain is not the wilderness! It's where...

    Save the Las Herrerias horses.

I rode his horse "Boni" (Bonita, beautiful) in 2015. A Spanish father and son rode ahead of me, and VIctor walked with us the whole way. Sometimes I could see by his shadow that he was holding Boni's tail. He goes on foot up to O'Cebreiro and back with his horses sometimes twice a day.

Senior Newbies planning first Camino- advice?

Another vote for Hotel Itzalpea, and for trekking poles! It took me a few days to begin using them effectively but they really helped. I walked at age 62. The first two days (SJPP to Orisson, then to Roncesvalles) were the hardest of the whole Camino for me. Have a wonderful time!

Your one picture that captures how you feel about being on the Camino!

I love this thread. So many good memories shared!

Your one picture that captures how you feel about being on the Camino!

During the last week of walking (August-October 2015), and then at Finisterre 2 days (and several long hot showers!) after reaching Santiago.

    Surprise map find.

While I was walking 3 years ago, my then-kinda-new sweetie put a big map of Spain on his bedroom wall so he could see what town or village I had reached each day, which I reported by text message that arrived while he was sleeping. He left the big map there on the wall for the next couple of...

Grandma's on the Camino: Reflections on a 48-Day Walking Pilgrimage to Santiago???

One of the most memorable books I read before my Camino.

    Finally begins

I started walking from St. Jean Pied de Port one year ago today. Oh I thought I was ready! And I was, but I wasn't. What an adventure! What companions! Have a wonderful Camino!

    Denise's mother's prayer

Thank you for sharing this. I thought about the loss to Denise's family, and to the family of all peregrinas and peregrinos, as I walked yesterday from Astorga to El Ganso. I sang softly, "Amazing Grace," and "may the long time sunshine, all love, surround you. May the pure light within you...
