I LOVE San Antón! I have stayed there as a pilgrim and was a hospitalero last summer and had hoped to be there this summer. I understand the reasoning and think that Ovidio, while making what must have been a hard decision, is doing the right thing. He must be heartbroken. I am hoping that...
I was a hospitalero at San Antón for the first quincena of June. During the 15 nights I was there, we were only full 1 night. There were at least 3 people per day who came in to visit the ruins and were awestruck (as was I on my Camino, hence why I go back to volunteer) and would have stayed...
I walked the CF from August 11 to Sept 8 (or so, I remember it was 26 days). I only had a silk liner and never needed more, not even a shirt. I biked the CF in Sept and did take a lightweight bag and used it, except when in a hotel, every night. So for your plan I would agree that a...
Didn't know about the housing for hospitaleros. Thanks for that bit of news, Rebekah. I am so looking forward to getting there. And, to being there for two weeks.
Greetings! If you are a day or two behind your schedule, my partner and I will be your hospitaleros at San Antón. We will be there for the first quincena of June. I also fell in love with the place when I walked the Camino in 2016 but didn't stay there. In 2019 Rosy and I biked the Camino...
Hi. I carry a small pack or squishable sack with me. When I leave an albergue I take my wallet, passport, phone and carry them with me. I even take that little sack to the shower when I am in an albergue. My assumption is that no one would really want my very well worn extra shirt, underwear...
I did it in July (2022) without a guide. A good from from the Camino, my daughter and her partner did it We are all experienced backpackers and long distance trekkers. We used a guide service, Uritrek, to help set up logistics and reservations. And we used the guide book. And two of us...
I feel a need to put in a good word for The Camino de Costa Rica! My best friend from Spain (fellow hopspitalero) and I did it in July (2022) along with my daughter and her partner. It was fantastic! Due to various vacation and travel schedules we did it in 11 etapas rather than the...
I am also a trail runner fan and have gone through a bunch of different ones during my running and hiking life. When I walked my first Camino I started in my trusty La Sportiva Wildcats. (I had run several marathons and ultras in them, as well as backpacked, without problems.). But, I did my...
That's what I've done on two Caminos. I happened to use Teva's because I would feel comfortable hiking in them if I needed to and they function well as shower/albergue shoes as well as town shoes.
Great idea. I currently have a Cannondale R2000 road bike (but I put slightly larger tires on it--700x28) and a Salsa El Mariachi mtn bike, which could be equipped for touring. A gravel bike is between them and would seem ideal. But, I am wondering which of my current bikes to use. Also my...
I am considering doing the Camino de Madrid by bicycle. I have walked and cycled the CF. I see through these threads and other webpages that people do cycle the CdeM in about 5 days. My specific question is about the type of bike that would be best. For the CF we rented mtn bikes that were...
I found very lightweight sleeping bags with a zipper from RedCamp on Amazon for $18. They pack down to just over a liter and come with a compression sack. They are fine for shoulder season Caminos. In the warm months I carry a silk liner, which is about 5 oz, packs very small, and was plenty...
And, don't forget, there are pharmacies all along the Camino. I usually carry a very small first aid kit (in a zip lock bag) and I carry ibuprofen and neosporin. But, you can easily buy anything you need. So, my theory for a non-wilderness trip like the Camino is to carry less.
