    Certificado question....

John, thanks once again for your input. In this instance, I believe the UK walks were done some time ago, almost certainly without the kind of documentary evidence the Pilgrim Office would need, and most were not a Way of Saint James. Since there was no walking at all planned for Spain then...

    Certificado question....

Thank you everyone who has responded. John, thank you for this clarification. I was being asked about the possibility of certificados for 2 people who have done much walking as pilgrims in the UK over the years but would be doing little, if any, walking during a brief visit to Santiago. They...

    Certificado question....

Hello, please forgive me if this question has been asked and answered before, I have been searching online and not found a definitive answer. My understanding of the compostela/certificado situation is this: If you can evidence a walk or cycle ride across the requisite last 100/200 km and...

10 TIPS to Prevent Identity Theft while Traveling

Sorry this is a late reply to this very useful thread. When overseas I use a currency prepaid card in ATMs. The main driver for this was over-zealous security for my bank which automatically blocked my debit card after any use in a foreign ATM, even if I had advised my bank of travel plans...

    Rethinking plans (and baggage transport)

Please note that it is not just CSJ refugios that usually do not accept luggage sent ahead. Generally you cannot book ahead at most municipal refugios or at church or association-run refugios which are staffed by volunteers and paid for by voluntary contributions. These are run as first come...

First time walker and on my own! (eek)

I used a soft fabric security holster, worn underarm under your clothes, for passport, spare cash and cards. As long as you don't pack it too full it remains comfortable and hidden under your t-shirt. I got so used to it I wore it in bed! I also used a sturdy waist belt with zipped and...

    Hotel in St Jean

Good luck Drew - if you have any problems you could try the Hotel Ramuntcho. I don't speak French either so I enquired about reservations and booked online, all e-mails in English. I hope this link works : http://www.viamichelin.co.uk/web/Hotel/ ... oiNumber=1

    bed bugs and sleping bags-again!

Oops sorry Tulle I have been offline for a while so this post will come a bit late for you but for anyone else looking to treat their sleeping bags etc I would confirm that I sprayed my silk liner with a permethrin based product intended for treating outer clothes to be worn in mosquito infested...

Skilsaw you planning on making some Mickey Slims on the plane?

    bed bugs and sleping bags-again!

With regard to sleeping bag versus silk liner, I walked last year mid Sept to end of Oct and was glad to have sleeping bag in final 3 weeks. Up until then the silk would have sufficed. Bedbugs are on the increase everywhere, all over the world, possibly due to the massive increase in worldwide...

    Alternate route into Burgos

Oh yes LTFit you are right going into Leon was not much fun either, lots of diversions and uphills over road and rough paths. I presume all the works intended for 2010 are complete now, including the new bridge over the busy road - anyone walked this yet?

    Alternate route into Burgos

Oh how we should have taken your route annakappa .... I ended up with a huge blood-filled blister from all the tarmac walking. My husband wasn't keen on the alternative route as he didn't have a detailed guide for it so we took the official route. I wasn't bothered about the scenery (I do quite...

Walking first Camino Sept/Oct. Loads of questions.

I am not going to offer comment on the perennial boots/shoes or poles/stick debates as people have given lots of advice already :) I walked last year at almost exactly the same time as annakappa. It was a good time to go as the weather is good most of the time and not too crowded in most...

    How Much - Cuanto?

Indeed Falcon269, a still relevant 5 yr old question needs an updated answer... :D

    Fear: the Return Home

I wanted to do the camino because I wanted to do a long distance walk and I was interested in the history of the camino. There was no religious motivation for me at all. My husband was talked into it quite easily and after I was made redundant he took a sabbatical and we walked from SJPP in...

    How Much - Cuanto?

Albergues vary between 3 -10 euros, menus between 8 -10 euros. Plus breakfast, coffees, snacks, church & albergue donations, medicines, toiletries, postcards, stamps, internet access etc. Oh and beer ofc - mine was always cold - maybe I drink quicker than hel&scott :D Don't carry tons of cash...

    laundry

I washed clothes with the same unperfumed bath soap I used in the shower. Used albergue machines when available too. Usually these are operated by the hospitaleros who charge 3 euros or so for wash and a similar amount for drying, so you don't need your own machine soap powder.

Lot's of questions from newbie, please help!

1)I walked the Frances from SJPDP last September with my husband. Starting in London we got the Eurostar to Paris, then got train to Bordeaux where we stopped one night at a hotel. Bordeaux is very pretty and has lots of pilgrim associations (plus great wine and food). The next day we got...

What are the Do's and Don'ts of Albergue Etiquette?

All the above is superb advice. In the main the vast majority of pilgrims are kind, considerate and friendly. Ditto the hospitaleros. I think we met only two people who thought they merited special treatment everywhere they went and they didn't seem to make many friends.... But from my personal...
