Thank you for these comments. Your point about doing what we can as individuals, while also not taking on more responsibility than is valid as individuals is an important one.
I’ve felt very affirmed by the way that people have responded to my post here. It’s been a great read. I’ll keep doing...
Thank you. Such interesting, thoughtful replies. I really appreciate the time you all have taken with responses. What strikes me most is the idea of treading lightly wherever we are, doing whatever we are doing. It’s about making thoughtful, considered decisions at each moment. I suppose that’s...
Hola,
Each time I’ve walked a Camino and read posts about gear and clothing, I’ve wondered about the wider costs of walking, not just to me if I buy new gear, but to the environment. This is a question that I find going through my mind more and more. I’m curious if other people reflect on this...
Not Amazon. I think I saw reference to guide on this forum. I don’t remember, but the author Elle Bieling is member a the Forum and posted a message just above so send her a private message.
A long post. I’m using this to reflect, so feel free to skip anything.
I’m in Salamanca at the end of this walk. What a beautiful city. I’ll rest up tonight and head off to look around the city tomorrow morning. My train leaves for Madrid at 3.30pm tomorrow.
Today’s walk was lovely. Until...
I have a Euroschirm with clips. I’ve just finished the Ruta Teresiana from Avila to Salamanca and I’ve loved it. It’s worth the weight for me to keep the sun off.
Thank you. I think it’s 20 kms and along the path of an old railway line. Gentle gradients.
You can walk in shorter stages. It takes a bit of organising and would probably be a mixture of albergues and private accommodation. The guide book I’m using is by Elle Beiling who is a member of the...
Short post today. I’m done in. Today was so hard. A long day of 31 kms, however I was going okay in the morning and feeling good. Then at around the halfway mark the wind got up. It was so strong and right into my face. I made it to Alba de Tormes and I’m proud of myself and boy, was it hard...
Day 3 - Fontiveros to Mancera de Abajo
A great day’s walk. Set off in the pre-dawn, my favourite time of day. A pretty easy 3.5 kms walk to Rivilla de Barajas. There’s a bar there but it wasn’t open at that hour. I’d had a good breakfast anyway. About 9.5kms then to Narros del Castillo. On the...
Oh wow, a long day, partly through my own mistake. I started on Gotarrendura this morning just on light. It was extra dark because of heavy clouds. And my memory of what the guidebook said was a bit askew this morning. Should have had it in front of me as I was leaving. So anyway I got mixed up...
I started on the Ruta Teresiana today. What a great day! To begin with views of Avila in the early morning as the sun was rising were spectacular. And I enjoyed that apart from the beginning few kilometres, most of the day’s walking was cross country following tracks and paths and local dirt...
I’m at Hostal Gonzalo at the moment. It’s very pleasant- simple, basic room, clean and well set up. I like the location. Staff very friendly and helpful.
Thanks for the comment about the Chacos. I have a pair that I’m going to wear on the Ruta Teresiana and the Camino de Madrid in September and October. It’s good to hear your positive report. My training in them has gone really well. I like the airflow and room for my feet to spread.
I agree...
I use the rubber tips mostly, although I do find that the ones I have on my Black Diamond poles don’t grip very well on wet surfaces, such as pavement. This is especially the case on inclines and declines. The tips have a tendency to slip when pressure is applied. It’s trial and error, to work...
Does anyone have a recommendation of a video that shows good technique when walking carrying a pack and on the flat? I’ve found lots of information on using poles, but largely the focus is on climbing or descending or walking in the Nordic style. I’ll check on the poles tread too.
I’ve bought a Keepgo e-sim that provides data and it will work in Spain and the UK. I’ll activate it on arrival in Spain. It seems easy enough to top up and I don’t lose any data left on it, so long as I top it up annually and I think a dollar was enough to do that.
An update on the tests. The CamelBak worked brilliantly - the heater hooked onto the rim with the coils not touching the bottom, the outside remained completely cool to touch as was the rim. So, with the lid it would be easy to make and carry a tea or coffee if I wanted. And certainly easy to...
I’ve bought these two mugs to try. They’re from a local outdoors store, but the brands would be available pretty widely.
The first is stainless steel. camelbak brand. The advantages I can see with that are that it is deep enough that the heater when clipped on doesn’t touch the bottom, and it is...
