I have a couple of pairs myself (the was a sale on!). I’ve only done a couple of hundred kms in both. Previously I wore Cliftons on the Camino. They lasted well, and were very comfy, but the sole wasn’t firm enough for rocky surfaces; I could feel those rocks. The ATR sole is better on rough...
This demonstrates the importance of security planning, more so than all the equipment questions. I think the golden rule is anything of high value should be attached to you (or in a zipped pocket) - and never take it off until you are somewhere secure. As soon as it is in your hand or over your...
For those who want to walk from the cathedral, and don't mind the cost/diversion, VIP Executive Santa Iria Hotel was a pleasant stay at a reasonable distance (Lidl next to it). The diversion to the hotel and back to the route wasn't ideal. If I were doing it again, I'd start my day at the...
We are doing this in August (after already doing the 1st week out of Lisbon in June - school holiday limits!). Everything is reserved on Booking.com, coastal route from Porto. There are three exceptions were we have booked private rooms by email (to make stage distances sensible); these are at...
I'm assuming by your question you're not a regular walker, or maybe just on pavements. You need to decide if you need pole support when walking on footpaths with your backpack. The average walker shouldn't need them unless going cross-country, off the track so to speak (or you're body isn't all...
Observations on the first day from Lisbon.
1) have €2pp in change if you want a credential from the cathedral, otherwise you'll wait longer until tills are manned.
2) You walk past a supermarket about 20mins after the cathedral
3) We turned off the path at Praca David Leandro da Silva and...
A cheap compression bag is ideal organisation for all your plastic clothes (i assume!) - if you get a twin pack, you can put your dirty clothes in the other. Doesn't need to be waterproof if you have a waterproof cover for you back pack to keep all your stuff dry.
After Los Arcos
Two tough stages after Los Arcos, near 30km each. Definitely start before 7am on hot days. The rocky country paths are hard on the feet, a more rigid sole than my Hoka trainers would work better.
Logrono was a delightful city.
Shorter route today to Santo Domingo but the...
Services you'll find en route to Estella right now
Today we noticed ...
-- The taverna at the start of Calle Major in Puente La Reina opens at 6:30 for breakfast (it's not marked on Google maps?)
-- There is a bar in Maneru but the sign said open at 9am.
-- EGA Pan was the first shop we saw...
Leaving Pamplona
For couples with cash I can recommend Sercotel Europa and the excellent €23 menu at Bar Restaurante -San Nicolás La Cocina Vasca- Jatetxea.
We left at 7am and walked parallel to the Camino through Ciudadela de Pamplona which was impressive then to Iruña Café which opens at...
[Moderator note: 4 threads have been merged so we can follow Compass Chris along the Camino Frances]
Pamplona via Barcelona
Good start. Passing though Barcelona airport was a breeze (had printed QR Spanish health & NHS Covid certificate). Easy train to Barcelona Santa train station. Over night...
Just browsing Google Street View for my own trip in Spain starting in a week and wouldn't you know it, the Street View pictures from Google are littered with pilgrims. Here is an example (dated August 2017). I wonder how many of us can find ourselves en camino?
Tip 1: the metro ticket cash machine doesn't accept 20 euro notes. You can buy tickets with cash notes in the tourism office next to Costa in the airport (the lady there was exceptionally helpful)
I love a yummy meal and as I'll be in Portugal this summer I'm hoping for a better hit rate than the UK.
So, do you have a cafe, bar, restaurant recommendation? In fact, where was your best meal? (I hope this post doesn't get you reaching for snacks!). Wine & beer (vineyards?) recommendations...
