    Porto to Vila do Conde

I'm planning on a short day to Matosinhos only for my first day on the Camino out of Porto. So, I'm going to go have pancakes at O Diplomata for breakfast, then take a casual saunter of 12 km out along the river via the Senda Litoral. ^_^ I'm looking forward to it.

    Boat ride to Padron

As I understand it, you just have to get your Credencial stamped at the Church of Santiago de Padrón or in that of Santa María a Maior de Iria Flavia. It's advised but not required to visit the other sites related to St. James in Padron and around it. Then you go to the tourist office or the...

    Boat ride to Padron

I'm planning to divert to the Herbon Monastery after riding the boat from Vilanova de Arousa, and seeing if I can snag a bed at Herbon. They are supposed to have a lovely communal meal! Otherwise, if you stay in Padron, you can spend the day exploring Padron and get a Pedronia certificate!

Accommodations between Vila do Conde and Marinhas

If you can make it another 3.7km further to Fao, both The Spot Hostel Ofir and Hostel do Alto are favourably reviewed on Gronze and Booking.com.

Is Albergue De Peregrinos Armenteira closed?

I wrote to the Albergue De Peregrinos Armenteira (municipal) about two weeks ago inquiring about reservation, and didn't hear back from them. I wonder if this implied dispute with the local government is why. Per this thread from 2023 and the Albergues del Camino de Santiago website, they did...

Cies Islands day trip - from Baiona or from Vigo?

Wow, so nice to hear from a local! Thanks for the tip - I have indeed decided to go from Vigo. I'll buy my ticket/xunta pass around March, I think, so that I've got it early. My planned rest day to go to Cies is actually exactly on June 15 2024! So maybe I will indeed see you there!

Game of choices: to stay at Herbon or not?

If I weren't nosing around on all the details, I would have missed that Herbon even existed, for sure! Or I would have planned to walk in September, and missed staying at Armenteira Monastery as they don't take pilgrims in September. Or my other thread about going to the Cies Islands on my rest...

Game of choices: to stay at Herbon or not?

That sounds lovely. I should have a relatively short day from Herbon to Angueira de Suso after overnighting in Herbon, so I'll make sure to look around Padron and see some sights. Thanks for your experience!

Game of choices: to stay at Herbon or not?

Yes. I'm aware the Camino could take the wheel from me and tip me into a great mystery and adventure beyond my wildest contingency plans. And if that happens, I would welcome it. Nonetheless, it gives me great pleasure to fuss over the details now. I really enjoy planning. If I am annoying...

Game of choices: to stay at Herbon or not?

Thanks for the tip. I'll put on all my layers. I won't have a fleece but I have a couple of longsleeves (one merino hoodie, one hiking shirt) that I can layer under my rain jacket. And my scarf.

Game of choices: to stay at Herbon or not?

Thank you for this information. I'll go in June 2024 on the Camino. I guess I'll have to find out what time the boat leaves when I get to Vilanova de Arousa. I think Amare runs the speedboat and La Barca Del Peregrino runs the big boat? Just from Tripadvisor pictures. Or maybe both have a big...

Game of choices: to stay at Herbon or not?

Thank you! I'm going in June and sunrise should be around 7am then. Hopefully it will be light when I get going. The "preview" of the first km the day before sounds like a good plan, too. Thanks for suggesting it. June should be a busy season too. May just do as you suggest, put my pack down...

Game of choices: to stay at Herbon or not?

That's exactly what I was worried about - the long day from Armenteira to Vilanova de Arousa. If you remember, please tell me when did you leave Armenteira, and what time did you arrive in Vilanova de Arousa? Re: arriving at Herbon, I will plan to take the boat with Amare as suggested, have...

Game of choices: to stay at Herbon or not?

This is a very succinct way of getting to the heart of the question! I think you’re saying, do it, the Way invites me!

Game of choices: to stay at Herbon or not?

Thanks for the tip about the speedboat! When I get to Vilanova de Arousa, do I just tell the hospitalero that I want to take the speedboat the next day instead of the slow boat? Or do I show up at the docks in the morning and just hope? I will plan to arrive earlier at Herbon Monastery to line up.

Game of choices: to stay at Herbon or not?

Staying at Armenteira Monastery is also a priority for me. The very kind @kenwilltravel mentioned that it was a highlight of his experience on the Variante, along with the Ruta.

Game of choices: to stay at Herbon or not?

The more I research ahead of my Camino, the more interesting things I find to do/see/experience! Just discovered/heard about the apparently wonderful monastery at Herbon and would love to stay a night. For anyone not familiar, this is a restored monastery, apparently now a donativo albergue...

Cies Islands day trip - from Baiona or from Vigo?

Really appreciate you chiming in with your experience! I'm even more excited to make the day trip to Cies now. Because of what J Willhaus found out about the schedule from Baiona earlier (seems to only run from Baiona July-Sep), I'll walk on to Vigo and take the day trip from Vigo.

Cies Islands day trip - from Baiona or from Vigo?

I think if you show up at the ferry wanting to book a ticket they try to arrange the Xunta pass for you at the port (with minor chaos involved). From everything I'm reading (travel blogs etc), you absolutely do need the Xunta pass or your ferry ticket is wasted.
