The one thing I should have done before I left for the Camino

This may be a sign of advancing age however, I carry a small laminated card on me whenever I travel. On it is: my name, date of birth, blood type, list of meds and the name and contact number of my wife. I have never needed it but it may be vital in the event of an emergency.

    The Idea of Camino

Right on David. I am mindful of a old lesson from a small Buddhist handbook, I used to have. I am sorry that I cannot remember the name or give the appropriate shout out to the author. In essence it related the story of breaking your favourite tea cup. You then had the opportunity to lament on...

    Celebrating my old age

Point taken. A few lines, presented in isolation, often fail to reveal the thoughts and intent behind them. Buen Camino Dave on whatever path life has set before you. Getting up can sometimes be difficult, but is necessary for the next step forward. Best wishes for many more steps. Your post...

    Celebrating my old age

Well aren't you the little ray of sunshine. :) All six of my caminos have been post my 70th birthday and at 80, I am contemplating a 7th. I guess that I am past the back cover of the book. ;)

    Musical instruments on the Camino.

Some years ago, on the Appalachian Trail, I encountered a young man carrying a tuba. Yes full size. I never did find out why, however the fact that his travelling companion was carrying a pair of car hub caps may have helped open the discussion. I have often wondered what the hub caps sounded...

    Charging electronic devices...

If you are in trouble because you left your small adapter in a socket at your last albergue, check at the front desk of your next stop. They'll have a drawer full of them.

    Succinct advice

    Don't room with snorers
  8. B

Albergue idea - group snorers together, away from non-snorers

I was lying in my lower bunk reading one late afternoon before I went out for a meal. A male, 40 or 50ish, came to the side of my bunk, in bikini briefs, and spoke for some length to the person in the bunk above me. The odour coming off him in waves was almost visible. He, later, went to bed...

Best way of converting $CA to Euros

Exactly. Order cash in advance of travel wherever you can get good rates. You will have enough to worry about, especially if it is your first trip, when you arrive and need to find ongoing transportation from the airport. Atm's will be relatively easy to find during your walk in bigger towns.

    Not what I expected!

At last. Someone else admits to seeing a fly. LOL. I found them quite prevalent, especially when eating last October. Even to the point that when I was shown a room in a small hotel, I was told not to open the window because of the flies.

    Home again

Thank you Steve. Kind words indeed, in fact I may have to pay on our next visit to the Ale House. There are reasons why you have joined me on so many walks and some of them are exhibited in your kind post above. Few people walk repeatedly with another person unless there is a significant level...

    Home again

This is getting better and better I may have quite a future on the Camino

    Home again

Ah Kathy what a lovely post. Thank you. You encapsulate nicely, in paragraph four, what keeps us returning in spite of the perils set out in paragraph three. I will spend the winter moving from yes to no to maybe several times. The yes side of the equation looms larger as the difficulties fade...

    Home again

One of my thoughts as well as they were much more prevalent than in my previous 5 trips

    Home again

OMG...why have I not thought of that. The stories I have to tell......

    Home again

Thank you for the kind words. Yes it is a point that we all will reach. I feel that the key is to be rationale about any decisions and not arrive at them from a purely emotional point of view. There are ways and means to lessen the impact of a long walk. The Camino is a strange entity. When I...

    Home again

Well here I am back in the snows of Ontario after a month in Spain. I have learned a couple of things from the last Camino. Number one is that the national bird of Spain has to be the common house fly. I once again learned to eat with one hand and flap the other hand wildly around to protect...

If you are staying in a private room are you tipping the help?

C clearly, as a fellow Canadian, you will no doubt tip wait staff for good service. I have long felt that if I am tipping someone who brings me a plate of food, I should likely leave sometning for the person who cleans the room, sink and toilet in my hotel room.

Donkeys can be a nightmare - but what about goats??

I met a couple on the Appalachian Trail with a goat with its own set of panniers. It carried the woman's trail needs as she had an affliction which precluded her carrying her own pack. She said it made the difference between her walking the trail or staying home. Kind of her own "Jacotrans" service

Is it okay to want to walk the Frances alone?

You know that I hung on your every word Steve :)
