I also love entering Galicia and seeing all the green hills. I live in Dallas where it is dry and flat and was looking forward to the beautiful scenery.
Thanks for the reassurance on my route choice. I don’t usually overthink it or get nervous but reading some of the posts on the thousands coming into Santiago daily really worried me. Great info and support on the forum but I guess you can sucked down the rabbit hole if you start reading every post.
Need some advice/suggestions on my route:
My Experience: I have walked 7 Caminos since 2004. Last time on the Frances was January 2012. Since then have walked part of VDLP, Sanabres, Salvador, Primitivo (2x). Last walk in Early April 2017. So have all my equipment and lots of experience.
My...
Fellow Asian here! Definitely bring a small bottle of Tabasco sauce (or buy it there). Two items that I found helped with my spicy cravings: patatas bravas (tapa: fried potato with spicy tomato based sauce) and chorizo "picante" (spicy pork sausage). I also found small cans of spicy chili...
Great video Annie! I speak a little Spanish mostly remembered/learned from my high school Spanish and living in Texas. I listen to conversational Spanish on my computer before I leave for my caminos too, but find I often misuse words (and grammar too). On my recent Camino I was walking with a...

Damien: Thank you for sharing your thoughts and opening your heart. I just finished my fifth Camino and each one has been completely different...from light to very heavy but always exactly what I "needed" (even if I didn't know it at the time). One thing I have...
I am one of the slackers that rarely trains for my caminos...generally due to work and minimal time before I know I will have the time off. When I do train it is on flat land (Dallas is very flat). Just take it slow and you will see your fitness improve each day. Regarding downhills - use...
In January 2004 I read a short story that mentioned the camino (don't remember the story) and I think it registered in my brain somewhere...then read an out of date woman's travel book where it was mentioned sometime around May. I thought it sounded interesting but it never entered my mind that...
Walked the VdlP in March when it was 0 Celsius (32F) in the morning. Stayed in all the places mentioned with bedbugs (even the same rooms/beds described) and those little critters never woke up! Another reason I love walking in the winter time:)!
There is a nice artisan shop behind the cathedral that carries local handmade Galician ceramics (also jewelry and other local crafts). I think it is called Amboa. Last time I was there they had some unique mugs. Have a wonderful camino!
Laurie: I stayed in the new private albergue in Campobecerros in March. The train station albergue was closed and still filled with construction workers. The new albergue is located on the road to the right as you enter the village (lots of signs). It is a new construction with a single large...
From three visits to Santiago:
A Galician cookbook
Leather key chain with pewter shell attached
14k Gold scallop shell necklace
Small handmade Galician-design ceramic dish
Small blue tile with scallop shell
Orujo (for husband)
Silk scarf from Cathedral gift shop (for daughter)
Tienda.com imports Spanish products. They have blanched Marcona almonds available but they are a little expensive at $29.95 U.S. for 2.2 lbs. These are the real Spanish almonds.
I think this dead horse has been beaten to a pulp! As on the camino, I think we should be open to all people and cultures and give everyone the benefit that they are generally coming from a good place. Repeatedly "daring" or "challenging" someone that had no real negative intention other than...
Dougfitz: I agree with you. On my first camino years ago I only carried a small paper guide from the CSJ. It had no maps and no stages just a town by town listing of albergues and bars. Very basic. I just followed the arrows and stopped when I felt I needed to, or if I liked the feel of a...
It's invisible to the eye and burrows deep into your heart where it lies dormant until you get home and then slowly emerges from its cocoon. The only cure is to walk the camino again.
