The entire Camino Portuguese is the flattest. Whether you begin in Lisbon or Porto, whichever Portuguese route you take has very little elevation gain or loss.
On my first Camino (CF) in 2014, I got a bad stomach thing. It was running like wildfire through the pilgrims around me, in varying degrees of seriousness. For me, it resulted in about 12 hours of vomiting and a couple days of recovery. I never have known whether it was a food borne problem...
I haven’t camped on any of my European walks, although have a lot of experience with backpacking in the USA. They are totally different experiences. Anyway, I was a lot more scared by local hunters out boar shooting while walking than I would have been by the animals themselves. In season...
Phoenix, I often get the opposite response. Coming from the Pacific Northwest, hiking usually involves ascents and descents of a few thousand feet in the Cascades, along with oodles of scenic mountain beauty. People can’t comprehend how “just walking” could be interesting or difficult. Of...
Thanks for the replies. I guess I’ll bring the liner gloves, and cap. I don’t plan on a bag, but I also don’t need to be in an albergue, so blankets should be a possibility. The last decision is rain pants. I always take them, but I’ve only used used them twice. Usually it’s warm enough...
I plan to walk Zafra to Salamanca during the last two weeks of April. I have enough experience to understand weather is unpredictable. After reading blogs, I am still a little confused about what is likely. Weather averages show moderate highs in the 60 Fahrenheit’s. Am I likely to see temps...
As is obvious from the replies, this depends on many factors. Your gender, age, body size, etc. will all play a part. For me, a 63 year old woman with a regular body type (not wiry and slender), I lose a little weight, maybe 6-7 lbs, not more. And I'm not a big eater. If I walk with my...
I’ve walked 3 caminos. If I’m hot and sweaty, I want to shower and wash clothes. If it’s been cool and the walk not difficult I may not shower and wash. I often go several days without washing pants if it’s cool. Socks mostly get washed every day, and I would say I don’t go more than 2-3...
I have to respond to this, because 2 of us rode the Finland portion of the Iron Curtain trail last June. We started in Kirkenes, Norway and rode about 1,000 miles south on our foldable tandem. We were able to do this portion without camping at all. It is remote, but lodging is available every...
I like to take one pair of hiking pants that snap up into capris. I wear those hiking. Then a pair of light leggings and above knee skirt for after. If warm I don't wear the leggings. I take a long sleeve technical shirt for hiking and a colorful micro fabric workout shirt for after. I also...
Nothing against washing machines, but I've rarely used them on my two caminos. I just hand wash with Dr. Bronner's soap (and that mainly means soaking for a minute, not lots of scrubbing. Quick-dry clothing will dry over night most of the time, and socks will dry every other day even if it's...
Thank you. I completed the Frances in 2014, and I hope to get to Santiago and on to Finisterre and Muxia this year from Albergaria, where I fell before.
In September 2015 I started the Portugues Camino from Tomar. I broke my leg and had to return home. I plan to continue on this September. I assume I can use the same credential, and just add to it, even though it's a year old. Is this correct?
