First Camino, throw some advice my way

Honestly, the biggest deals are your boots and pack. You have to walk, for hours, a couple days (at least) in a row to know if you're going to have issues or if you will want/need sticks. But you'll also find out in time if your pack doesn't fit or your gear isn't protecting you enough from wind...

    ATMs on Camino Frances

6000 are the only ATMs I can reliably get cash from without any issue using either my BoA debit or my Visa credit card.

    considering canceling my trip :(

I think it might help if you looked at this from a different perspective. The fact that you used the term "successful" to describe other peregrinos tells me a lot. Also, the Camino isn't 500 miles. The camino encompasses thousands of miles. Your camino is as long as you make it. And put your...

    Is it worth it?

My advice would be to start in SJPP or even deeper back into France. You live close and can return. Walk with no set city of departure in mind - just walk! Enjoy the people you meet and take a day off when it suits and be content to leave when you are ready or have run out of time off.

SO here is my not very well thought out plan...

YEs. My last Camino I started walking on the 19th and made it to Santiago on June 1. And that was with rest days. And I am OK with catching a bus if I need to. I don't have to end in Santiago but I would prefer it. I have thought a lot about walking Yes that is pretty much exactly it. And I...

Leaving in 19 days - Last minute questions (cell memory, pillowcase, jewelry)

Oh yes - I spray everything. Bedbugs love everything that fits tight to your body - seams. A young girl on Camino asked me to look at her bites because she didn't know what they were - and they were a perfect trace of her panty lines and bra lines. The sight made a lasting impression on me. I...

SO here is my not very well thought out plan...

I leave here on the 14th (of this month) , arriving in Paris on the 15th and taking the TGV to Pau. I had planned to hang out with my friends in Buzy for the weekend and then take a train into SJPP on the 18th and walking on the 19th. But I had an email from said friends saying that they are...

    Social anxiety...

While you wouldn't walk up to a random group of people in a restaurant at home and ask to join them - the Camino is different. Most days you will have seen the people in the bar or cafe as you walked. You probably said hello or buen camino. It won't be as difficult a proposition as you're...

Leaving in 19 days - Last minute questions (cell memory, pillowcase, jewelry)

If your wedding band has a loose fit, leave it at home. If it is one of those things you never/rarely remove - leave it on. I have an issue with hand swelling so I removed it the first time but since the condition is treated now I wore it the second time. I only take my earrings off to clean...

who did Camino alone after you walked it with a friend/family?

I walked in 2012 with my son. Went back last year alone and walked the Norte and I have to admit I was pretty lonely. There just weren't any other walkers (or very few in the albuergues at night but none during the day while I walked.) But I am going back this month to walk the CF alone and...

Good Things That Happen On the Camino

How have I missed this thread? This is wonderful! I have experienced or seen or heard about so many small kindnesses on the Camino that meant so much. Peregrinos who gathered money to pay for a room for someone who needed some privacy and a good sleep for a night. Sharing food with young people...

can i camp outside the Albergues?

There was a woman on the CF in 2012 who had her two babies with her. Many albuergues wouldn't allow them to stay (some did - and the babies had strep throat. It was a disaster.) and she ended up camping outside in some places. But I remember that being a problem in a couple of towns though I...

    Need some help thanks

This is one of those things that is talked about by people before or after their Camino more than it ever is on the actual Camino. No one really cares whether or not another Peregrino is walking from Saria or doing it in legs or just spending a few days walking in a location convenient to them...

    Final prep

I did have a day when we were walking that included lightning strikes near by - and HAIL. Lots of hail. It was cold and there was only one Albergue and we grabbed the last two spots. Three young women came in behind us and were told they had to walk on another 10 km. Later, a young Italian man...

    Final prep

I bought a neon orange rain coat for my first Camino. I had visions of us walking on streets in pouring rain and I wanted us to be as visible as possible. I wore that raincoat for all of the first 2 1/2 weeks and several times in the weeks that followed. It rains in the Pyrennees and it rains in...

Travel sized stuff along the way

Not really. I remember one American woman saying she was going to come back and market travel size necessaries to tiendas along the way. Frankly I didn't see it as a problem. I am ok to carry a normal size thing of toothpaste and some body soap for body and clothes washing.

How many brought a sheet or cover treated with permethrin?

You should spray all your stuff thoroughly - as in it should be wet when you are done. Leave it to dry outdoors. It does wash out - but not for at least 6 washings. I do all my clothes - paying special attention to seams and any place that will be tighter against my skin. Like panties and bras...

    2 Last Minute Questions

Well, I don't believe it. I spend a lot of time in Europe, and I was a server here in the US, and I can tell you being left a tip is never "insulting" unless it is a penny or a dime left specifically as an insult. Servers in Spain are generally paid around 7.50 an hour - but they are NOT just...
