    Toilet paper, litter and graffiti

It was nice to walk the Frances this early spring and not have the "white paper" Camino markers leading the way. We were quite confronted by the masses of toilet paper and rubbish on our first ever Camino (the Frances). I forward a suggestion that the Spanish government and organisations that...

Zariquiegui, any idea if accommodations have reopened this year?

When we walked through in March the albergue that we stayed at in 2017 had closed its accommodation section and was operating only as a cafe/tienda. I think they aren't planning on reopening it. Shame, as it was a good place to stop.

Staging options around Cruz de Ferro

Just recently walked the Frances again and this time decided to go a bit further past Astorga to Murias do Rechivaldo and stayed at Albergue Las Agedas and then walked to Foncebadon and stayed at Hostal Convento de Foncebadon. Much easier than last time's Astorga to El Acebo.

LIVE from the Camino Walking the Meseta now. Advice welcome

Santa Maria is in the heart of town? The nun definitely wasn't letting us stay together though. And we're both pushing 60. She directed us to Santa Clara so we retraced our steps to there to check it out but ended up booking a room at Hostal Albe and we reckon it's the best pension we have...

    Meals in Roncesvalles, worth it?

Ate there in early March. Dinner was disappointing compared to what we got in late 2017, and the service very lacking. We wish we'd eaten at the bar earlier instead. As it was early in the season nothing obvious was open before Zubiri. High season will have plenty of choices for breakfast and lunch.

LIVE from the Camino Walking the Meseta now. Advice welcome

The nuns at Santa Maria are lovely. We did not stay there as they segregate males & females and my husband wasn't keen on that at all. But the nun asked me to go upstairs to the female dorms to look anyway. The facilities were excellent, and the 4 rooms were assigned culturally.... the Europe...

LIVE from the Camino What a difference

Left snowy Roncesvalles on the 4th of March. Mainly solitary walking till Burgos with a great group of fellow pilgrims from all around the world. No rain, but very strong head on winds for many days and mainly lower temperatures while walking (from the perspective of Aussies who left Sydney in...

Thiefs on Camino Francés - warning

So sorry to hear this and shocking that it was a family. I believe in Karma and eventually their bad deeds will come back to bite them. 👿🥺

    Liner versus sleeping bag

You are right that bed bugs can crawl in, but so far they haven’t bothered with me and only attacked everything sticking out. Why am I so tasty 😋

    Liner versus sleeping bag

Both, the liner is great as a shield against the inevitable bed bugs and eventually you will want a sleeping bag when it gets cold and you find yourself in an alburgue with no blankets.

How do you travel with money on the Camino?

Get a good “anti skimming” money belt and wear it all the time except for showering where it will be in a zip lock bag in the cubicle with you. We wear our to bed where it feels really dodgy, or secured in your sleeping bag / liner mid way as we have met people who have had their stolen out of...

Who is trashing the Camino with the graffiti phrase ‘melted rubber humans ‘

Sad to say, but it was obvious in its green scribble when we came off the Norte. Last year "wild sheep" was the annoying graffiti along the Frances, but at least not to Santiago (the ink ran out luckily) and a Google search listed it as a German punk rock band. Possibly this is the same culprit...

Renting a horse for small portions

Having owned a horse and having ridden 250km rides multiple times in steep terrain, here's a heads up.......it isn't easy for the horse and it won't be easy for you either. To properly ride high country you must raise yourself out of the saddle and give the horse the ability to use its...

Rocking quietly in the corner.... (UPDATE post 51)

Just think of all those poor people who will never take the chance on this amazing experience. At the end when you reach the cathedral you'll be so glad you rose to the challenge and this will enhance everything else you do for the rest of your life. Remember to walk one day at a time and if a...

    Children on the Camino?

Don't hesitate on taking a child on the Camino that is keen to go with you. Walk each day with no set in stone distance, be flexible in attitude and enjoy all the interactions you will both have along the way. Our daughter not only enjoyed the experience, she also learnt so much walking the...

    Help with Roncesvalles Reservations

I pre booked Roncevalles from Australia to be certain we had a bed and went through the booking procedure, but I couldn't tell if the card payment went through. I emailed and asked whether it had & they kindly informed me (in Spanish) that it hadn't. I then re tried and successfully booked and...

    April/May Camino Footwear

Injinji toe socks. We all wear them for running to prevent blisters and they are great for walking too. But take enough pairs if you are a heavier person, as my husband put holes in the soles of all three of his. I find I had to release the hem at the top of my socks as they were too tight and...

Route Napoleon closed 1 Nov to 31 March

Yes, yes, yes! We walked into Santiago on the 16th Oct, rested a day, then walked on to Muxia and finished in Finisterre on the 23rd Oct. Awesome time and trod every cm of it, carrying our packs all the way. Sorry we missed you and thought about you at the wine fountain! Unfortunately the pump...

Route Napoleon closed 1 Nov to 31 March

We took the Valcaros Route inadvertently (that's what happens when your 14 year old daughter leads the way!) and we were 10 km into the way when we realised. Taking the attitude of "never make firm plans" we headed on and had the most amazingly scenic walk through beautiful villages, along...
