    Between Pamplona and Najera

For anyone planning the Frances for the future. I arrived in Puente la Reina on the 28th February 2019 or was it the 1st March??? having completed my first day after walking from Pamplona. That evening the whole town from the youngest to the eldest in one giant fancy dress festival. I was told...

Bus and Train Hubs Along The French Camino

When I 'did' the Frances in 2019 I flew from the UK to Bilbao and then bussed down to Pamplona to start there. With that in mind, I had a look at connections, flight wise from Paris to Bilbao. I have to admit I didn't look for August, looking as I did for April/May 2024 but notwithstanding...

    Sarria to Santiago March 2024

Lucky? me? It didn't rain between 28th Feb and the 23rd March either! 29 days on the Frances without a drop (apart from a few drops while I was inside the 19th hole having a drink at the golf course west of Najera). Would this be a good time to tell you I'm walking the Portuguese with my...

    Sarria to Santiago March 2024

And just to be contradictory, it DIDN'T rain at all from the 24th-29th March 2019, Sarria-SdC. I know, I was there!

Cruz de Ferro - What is its history, and what happens to all those stones?

I know where one of the 'stones' are. It's on top of the heater in our living room! The story. In March 2019 I walked from Pamplona to SdC. I took with me a piece of marble stone that had our three grandchildrens name's written thereon. The names and the stone were coated in varnish and I was...

Is O Cebreiro - SdC in 8 days doable?

I did it in 7 days in 2019 as a wrinklie 69yrs old. I reckon I could repeat that 4yrs later and I would still have a silly grin on my face. (and I don't ride mountain bikes!)

Disparities between Wise Pilgrim and Brierley distances

At the risk of boring people (I've written this before,) The Wise pilgrim gives Pamplona to SdC as 700kms. After 29 days I arrived at 'The Office' and was given a Cerfiticate (sic) that said 729kms. I reckon they allowed 1km a day to get to the Bar on an evening. (and get back!!!)

Special Compostela for pilgrims walking longer distances?

The 'Good Pilgrim' Guide for the Frances, says that Pamplona to SdC is 700Kms. When I got to the Office in SdC I was asked how many days I had been on the Way. 29 days I replied truthfully. My Cerfiticate (sic) says I walked 729Kms. I reckon they added a Km a day to account for the visit to...

    Memorable Meals

"best value for money: Parillada Xacobeo in Triacastela (beef steak, vegetables, potatoes and a bottle of Crianza for 10€" I totally concur with the above comment 4yrs ago today I completed my Camino Frances and the Xacobeo stands out, not only for the bar and meal but also their...

    Cash vs Credit or Debit

For all of you lucky people about to arrive in Spain and considering using a debit card to obtain cash could I give this info. Nearly all ATM's linked to the major Banks in Spain make a charge to provide this service. The only one I found last year were the ATM's connected to the UNICAJA Bank...

    Accommodation in O Cebreiro

In a word, no. Only in two places did I encounter any form of problem and one of them was at O'Cebriero. I am pleased that you have had no reason to use the luggage services but what is puzzling about a perigrinos using such services.

    Accommodation in O Cebreiro

Re the Municipal Albergue @ O'Cebrerio do not accept baggage, so, if you were thinking of climbing up there sans rucksack, if you arrive at the Municipal they will deny all knowledge. I found mine at a restaurant in the village, no thanks to the receptionist at O'C.

House on the camino Frances (Leon) for sale

I had a lovely evening in Mansilla in a bar where the bartender explained to me the various sizes of wine ordered by his customers. He went on to describe their social habits in visiting many bars to meet their friends without succumbing to alcoholic poisoning.

Longest sections of Camino Frances without facilities

It's March 2019 and I'm approaching Calzadilla de la Cueza. Like all the rest, this village appeared like an apparition out of the ground. Walking along the Calle Mayor it was like walking onto a film set where all the inhabitants had been abducted. No one in front of me, no one behind on the...

Longest sections of Camino Frances without facilities

When I walked in 2019, I recall that the stretch from Villafranca Montes de Orca to Ages took, well, ages!!! Just checked on the guidebook and it's recorded as 16kms. Yes, there is an intermediate village of San Juan de Ortega but when I did the journey in March, there were no facilities there...

Cruz de Ferro replica in Texas

The bulldozer didn't visit between March 2019 and March 2020 because I found the stone I had left! 11months earlier. (and I have it at home on the burner in the lounge.)

Where to get Credencial stamps in Pamplona?

Day 1. Camino Frances. March 2019 Walking out of Pamplona, having arrived the previous evening by bus from Bilbao, it occurred to me that I had failed to get my Credencial stamped in my hostel. Almost the last buildings, before heading into the countryside are of the University of Navarra. I...

    Camino francés in Feb/March

If you start in, say Pamplona rather than in Spdp you miss out on the more rugged parts of the Camino. It's still 799kms to SdC so don't think it's a walk in the park. In 2019 i started in Pamplona on 1st March arriving on the 29th without feeling any rain on my head. It did rain but I was in...
