I would skip Orisson if I were to do it again. If unfit Orisson appears as though a welcome refuge but the incline reduces straight after. I would stay over in SJPDP and with a booking for Roncesvalles make a slow and enjoyable walk to the top and over.
An overthought question.
Whether leaving early or late gauge what's going on around you. Early with a headlamp is good for prime things ahead but I found late mornings fitted in fine. Less people and more anonymity.
Stayed there a couple of weeks ago. Crap everywhere. Pallets, cement bags and the current accomodation unfinished. Don't go by romantic pictures. It's a half baked experience of sleeping in a very cold canvas tent and little native experience, all be it in Spain.
Move onto the next town.
I've just booked 8 stop overs from SJPDP to Najera which includes two rest days in Pamplona and Najera.
Starting mid April I needed a plan to work with until things unfold and I settle into the 'no need' mentality. So for me personally, there was a need.
You simplified the very nature of how to travel. Not his way, not her way, but our individual way.
Having slept from doorways penniless and hotels which are embarrassingly expensive they have both presented personalities of grit, integrity and a story to tell from the heart.
The answer is to...
Which confirms the notion that each persons camino is personal.
For myself each day, hour, minute and step will be my reward.
And that end bit. I'll leave that alone to a surprize.
Much appreciated. I guessed it can fluctuate. As an example, the average April temperature for SJDP is 16C yet this year was 26C on the 12th April. That said, I may break in some shoes for the first leg just in case and if there's no need donate them.
Very much appreciated. I'm one of the last to go from shorts to trousers so don't feel the cold as much as most, and was hoping to maximise backpack space by not taking trekking shoes. April 2023.
As this thread is regarding the Frances during April and some of you have done this, how much of this route could be achieved in trekking sandals during mid April-May?
