I use the big, boxy blue bags from IKEA that zip up the middle. My backpack and poles fit perfectly, the shape is spot on, and it is light enough to slip into my backpack and carry with me for the return trip.

Buen Camino.
I just read the news article that you sourced for your post.
I am much relieved that I am not the only one distressed by the numbers of people who travel the CF, as pilgrims, with suitcases.
Travel the CF! It is a wonderful journey! If you drive, take a bus tour, etc. enjoy the journey...
I had forgotten about the catastrophic rainfall recently - where was my head???
I hope you are dry and somewhat comfortable in Madrid - there are worse places to get stranded.
What is the airline doing about your packs? Are they going to send them to - where - what hotel? How long do they...
Wow. Very sorry to hear about all this stress so early in your journey! It sounds like you have the absolute right attitude.

I haven't seen this before - I guess it is after my time. Isn't there also an old, scarecrow-y statue along that route before you get to Astorga? Or did this replace it?
By the Way, at first I thought you were mocking my profile photo when you mentioned a statue of a drinking pilgrim.
I found the costs to be pretty much the same between the two routes. That being said, I found more options to be available on the Frances, simply, I suspect, because it is more popular. The friendliness and helpfulness was equal on both.
I wish I could give you the numbers you want/need for...
I took water bottles.
Some mention that, with a hydration pack, you don't have to stop to drink. I see that as a drawback. I think it is a good idea to stop when you drink. Your body gets a needed rest, even if just for a few minutes, and you get some deep sips of water as needed.
