Which part to choose between Lisbon and Porto

I loved walking from Tomar to Coimbra in 6 days in April 2023. As a solo female staying at albergues and guesthouses I met lots of other people and lots of pilgrims to walk with or alone. I also went to Luso to walk in the National Park there.

Camino from Coimbra starting next week

I agree with Jungleboy & Phil71. Tomar to Coimbra is beautiful camino walking and allow time to explore both towns which have interesting significant historic sites.

    Ponte de Lima

Casa da Travassa has comfortable rooms, a communal kitchen and small dining area and laundry facilities in a quiet location close to the camino. Enjoyed my stay there in May.

I agree: Tomar to Coimbra is great to walk. Loved it and can recommend staying at Hostel O Lagereiro in Alvorge. Buen camino

The most beautiful stamp : Caldas de Reis

Hi Mary Ellen. I walked from Tomar to Coimbra, a very pretty part, and found enough cafes/bars for most of it but certainly not as many as past Porto. Consult a guide book or gronze.com to be prepared.

ATMS / Bank availability on the CP

Thank you so much for this detailed helpful reply. It will be so much easier doing it this way as last time I went into a Vodafone store as I wasn't confident doing it online. Bom caminho and muchas gracias!

How did you top up your local SIM card using the MB ATM? Was yours a Vodafone sim?

    Tomar camino plans

Yes hard to know about transport til you're there I suppose. I'm at the Thomar Story Guest House. Will look out for you both. Am not expecting there to be many pilgrims around compared to my last camino from Porto last year.

Thank you Jim. Good to know. I am in Tomar those 2 nights too before starting walking. Might see you there or on the way. 🙂

    Tomar camino plans

I come from Australia so understand you wanting to see as much as you can but you also may try to see too much and end up rushing everywhere. I have not been to Braga so can't comment about it. But it is good to have 2 nights in a place so a day of exploring can be done with a daypack and just...

    Tomar camino plans

What is the name of that hotel please? I stayed 2 nights in Combarro so enjoyed an extra day exploring the village and walking around the coast. I highly recommend staying at Hostel Nuestra Senora del Camino owned and run by the lovely Carmen. Private rooms and dorms, new, clean, washer, dryer...

    Where to start? Tomar? Porto?

Thank you Flog for your detailed reply. I now have a clearer idea of this approach to Porto. Am still deciding which way to go. I have not walked the higher level by Avinda de Republica before which is appealing too.

    Where to start? Tomar? Porto?

Thank you Nick. Good advice as I had not studied the route closely. Just inspired by another walker's post to walk via Lavadores and Alfurada but see now to continue eastward as you suggest to cross the Don Luis 1 bridge. And that Miradouro is a great idea too.

    Where to start? Tomar? Porto?

Interesting to know this as I am planning to walk up the coast from Espinho into Porto so I wonder how that coastal approach to the bridge and city will compare. And will walk Tomar to Coimbra before that.

I am also interested to know if a sleeping bag is needed starting in early April as only have a liner and hoping blankets are available. Otherwise will wear all layers to sleep.

    Central vs Coastal

Thank you. I read more about it. The sand walking sounds tough on the legs for me but it looks spectacular.

    Central vs Coastal

Is there lots of accommodation and bars on the Fishermans Trail to support 15-20 km stages?

    Central vs Coastal

Wow. I had so many greetings from Portuguese locals on the coastal route and loved it. I loved all the forest and village walking inland parallel to the coast on the coastal route as well as along the Atlantic coast.
