Have a great walk Chrissy, it's a very special part of the world. Having said that the first day of your walk, out of Lucca, is one of the least interesting of the whole VF.. If I remember correctly, it's pretty much built up and road walking most of the way.

Thanks for getting back, the train was my fall back option as well, I was kind of reluctant but with no other options it seems the only way, we might catch the train from Vercelli and hop out at Palestro then walk on to Mortara.
