I can only dream of a passenger railroad system that is as countryside appealing, welcoming, and dependable, as what has been my experience in Europe. So, when I have a chance to be on a train, I'm all aboard! My ride from Montparnasse to Bayonne was spent in and out of cat naps. 50 days later...
SideWinder: this is from my Facebook post of April, 2017. It is my somewhat cautionary tale of what happened to me trying to get from CDG to Montparnasse station: "Arrived late afternoon in Bayonne. Sunny, but cool. Plane was delayed out of Seattle. Paris immigration took 45 minutes. A normal 40...
Madrid delights at every turn. It has never felt like a big city to me. I was there in September and October this year to visit old friends (we're all old now). I normally stay at the Hotel Europa which is smack on the Puerta del Sol directly across from the old post office and its famous clock...
I took the train from Santiago to Paris with an overnight stay in Hendaye. It was relaxed, but I must say it induced a sense of longing as I observed pilgrims on the very trails I myself trod just a few days earlier.
I flew Delta/Air France from Seattle to CDG unconcerned about time. After all, I had 4 hours from landing to make it to Gare Montparnasse in time for the train to Bayonne. Ha! First, the flight was delayed 45 minutes out of Seattle. On arrival, immigration consumed 45 minutes. At baggage claim I...
Sirron—I flew on Delta and landed at CDG. My schedule said I had 5 hours to get from CDG to my train departure at Gare Montparnasse. a) Delta was late taking off and late landing; b) The immigration line was interminably long; c) It took a while to locate my walking poles (in oversized baggage...
I flew into Paris from Seattle, then train from Montparnasse to Bayonne where I stayed two nights to get over jet lag. It seems many folks go directly to SJPdP bypassing Bayonne, but it is a historically important city and a delight to explore. The river Nive, on which Bayonne is situated, is...
I'm also 80. It is not impossible to rent a car at 80, but there is a premium and some agencies will not rent to folks over 75. You just need to check. How did I get to this age so damn fast!
In the past, I've obtained my IDP from AAA. As several have expressed, I have never been asked for it in any European country in which I rented a car. My Washington State driver's license has always sufficed. With my luck, if I elect not to get an IDP, that will be the time I'm asked for it. ;)...
Dang! After I posted I got to thinking: John, what makes you think someone who identifies in this forum as Cicada is a female? Alas, I have my answer. Permit me to wipe that last bit of egg off my face so I can start the day. Sometimes there is no accounting for the things that can unconsciously...
Wouldn't that have been a wonderful coincidence! I took the train from Paris Montparnesse on April 19th arriving in Bayonne and walking across the street to the Hotel Cote Basque where I stayed the evenings of the 19th and 20th. On April 21st, I was on the 11:10 a.m. bus at the Bayonne train...
I was also in Bayonne in mid-April (2017), and learned there was no train because of a rock/mud slide. The bus was fine. Instead of walking through the doors onto a train platform, the bus was in the train station parking lot waiting for us to board in the warm mid-morning sunshine. St. Jean...
Ditto, Anhalter. Bayonne is a charming and welcoming city. After the flight to Paris (from Seattle) then the train from Montparnasse, I spent two nights there while shaking off jet lag before heading to SJPdP. Bayonne's river, the Nive, is the same river that flows through SJPdP.
