Can we have an experienced view on our planned first leg, please :)

I walked last year starting in Irun on 1 October. Wonderful time of year to walk!! The hostel in Irun closed last year on 30 September, so we walked to a private hostel a few kms outside of town. It was also closed at one point earlier in the season, for reasons unknown, so I would double check...

A woman alone on the Norte?

Hi! I walked Norte/Primitivo 'solo' this October/November. However, I was only one night truly alone in a place and that was because I walked a bit further than the others that day to end in a town with a church so I could attend Mass. Otherwise, there was always someone else in the...

Places to stop between Poo and Oviedo? Plus a question about Mass.

Thanks, guys! Those were some places I was looking at, too. Might need to consider more. Andrea

Places to stop between Poo and Oviedo? Plus a question about Mass.

Do you know the name of the monastery? Or what town? I have seen pictures and posters of a monastery near the norte/Primitivo split, but haven't seen the name. I am planning on taking the Primitivo, though I am a bit reluctant about leaving the ocean!

Places to stop between Poo and Oviedo? Plus a question about Mass.

Hi all! I am with Tash in Playa del Poo (just passed Llanes) at the youth hostel (wonderful! The hospitalero just gave us fresh figs he picked of the tree and told us to help ourselves to more) and we are discussing the next few days. I was wondering if there are any tips on places to stay (or...

LIVE from the Camino Norte blog

Santoño to Güemes was wonderful. Stayed at recommended albergue. Great food, great people. Next to Santander. Municipal albergue by cathedral. Nice place, great lunch in town. Lady in charge cut the lights and WiFi at exactly 10:01, so needing to upload more to the blog today. Santander to...

LIVE from the Camino Norte blog

Just a couple of mosquitoes. Unfortunately, we believe also bedbugs. 4 of us were itchy after Augosto (we left a note) and the French guys with us saw some bugs on the pillow. We thought they were not bedbugs at first, but then I used my sleeping bag again in Gernika and got more. All over the...

LIVE from the Camino Norte blog

Left at 12 and walked a short day to Portugalete ~ stayed at La Gran Vita or something like that. 2 German guys we see all the time told us about it. 16 per person double room. Altogether, 6 stayed there. Great bar across the way with super cheap and really good food. Municipal albergue in...

Made it to Bilbao. Such a long walk from Gernika. Trying to plan what to do next - rest day or late start. Many are in the same boat. Will post sometime when I have wifi (on computer at Granbara Hostel - lovely place), but stages 1-5 are up!

Thanks! My walking my partner (tash, from these boards as well), might camp out if we can't find something reasonable. I enjoyed this section quite a lot. Coming into Zarautz I was done for! But today was good. When did you stay here? I really don't want to be the one to tell you this, but...

2nd night pension in San Sebastian. 3rd night at Gran Camping Zarautz. Last night albergue in Deba. Tonight Pension Augusto in Markina. Any tips on Gernika? Looks quite pricey.

Anyone just back? I hear Norte is terribly Crowded

On the Norte now, and doesn't feel crowded. Municipal albergue closed, so perhaps pilgrims are spreading out around the cities? San Sebastian youth hostel full 2 days ago; finding an inexpensive pension a bit hard. Albergue in Deba was great last night. 2 rooms open - 20 beds instead of the...

Thanks! Saw this this morning. That's what we ended up doing. Took the bus out and got what we needed. Tourist office very helpful in finding bus stop- in same plaza as tourist office.

LIVE from the Camino Norte blog

I actually ran in to tashgonewalkabout in the Madrid train station, so we rode the train together and wandered around Irun for a bit. She had prebooked a pension in town and I was planning on going to the albergue shefollowsseashells had recommended. We ran into an Irish chap and then I set off...

Irun - place to stay October 1st

I will also be getting there on the 1st, but into Hendaye at 2pm. I noticed as well the albergue is closed and plan to walk the 4kms to Hondarriba. After I find trekking poles, though. Didn't find any today.

Irun - place to stay October 1st

There is also a tourist information in Irun. Plaza Luis Mariano 3 Open from 10:30-13:30 and 15:30-19:00 I need to stop in myself. It looks to be not too far from the I run train station.
