I walked the Norte in May and never did a 37km day. I mostly did 22-25 I think. Check the Buen Camino app for an up-to-date listing of places. I also had the Ciccerone guide, which had some weird days mapped out at close to 40km, but I never did that ... there is always another stop...
The Norte doesnt have much in the way of altitude, so less likely to be so cold. I needed my two season bag on the Frances, which I walked in the same season.
Blankets on the Norte are very very common, I took my sleeping bag, but probably only use it 5 - 8 times on a 50 day trip. There wasnt even a fight to get blankets either ... I was also using them to make 'curtains' all around my bottom bunks for added privacy and noise insulation.
One thing...
I started on May 1st this year. I didn't pre-book anything before arrival in Spain, and I used the Ciccerone guide book to decide where I was going to stay each day.
I found beds OK without too much stress. I was using a guidebook that wasnt up to date and that caused a few problems ...
I'll add another thought.
I didnt do the Primitivo, and I stayed on the regular Norte path.
Why? The Primitivo can be a stand-alone trip.
If I did the Primitivo on my trip this year, I think it's unlikely I would have returned to finish the regular Norte route. But coming back and doing...
I walked the Norte in May / June ... of the 3 routes I have done, its easily my faourite.
The less positive posts of late seem to relate to how easy / hard it is to find a bed ... It was pretty much OK for me in May / June, and I am guessing the peak season is ending, so perhaps it will get...
The Buen Camino app was very popular when I walked the Norte earlier this year ... more reliable than the guide book too, although I had the older edition rather than the newest one.
The route is very well marked though, and you'll meet lots of people on the way, although not as many as the...
I didnt encounter mosquitos in May and June ... different season tho, so not sure about august or later.
My Camino was 50 days, I met one person who got bedbugs, but she got them from a hostel not an albergue.
Booking one day ahead should be OK I think. The few I did book I used booking.com...
I walked in May. And perhaps May, will be similar to late September ... not all the albergues will be open, some are peak month only.
I didnt really struggle too much ... I used an out of date guidebook which didnt always help. An app with up to date listings might be better.
However ... I...
I think its wise to book for Zaruatz. It has fairly limited pilgrim options I think.
I followed my guide book and planned to stay in the youth hostel, but they dont take pilgrims anymore. I then walked back to the start of town and stayed in the Zaruatz hostel. I took the last bed there ... it...
I arrived in Deba at 1pm and went to the tourist office, but they sent me straight to the albergue. They advised me it was open, and so no need to register with them, but 'check in' directly.
I also walked San Sebastian to Zarautz on my Camino earlier this year.
Limited accomodation in Zarautz though. My guidebook suggested the Youth Hostel, but they dont accept pilgrims anymore. This is one town where pre-booking might be recommended.
I used Buen Camino and Camino Places, but only sparingly. The maps were not always 100% reliable, so I would prefer to use the waymarking to ensure I was on the 'way'. Camino Places mis-directed me on the way to Laredo, and Buen Camino was incorrect on a short section towards Muxia. I rarely...
I walked the Norte this year, I thought it was excellent ... my favourite Camino. Some of the scenery really is jaw-dropping, and the Camino attracts a great mix of pilgrims, young and old ... but never too many of them. You really can choose to be alone, or have a new friends / group experience...
Hi Jenny
I dont think the first day on the Norte will be harder than the first day on the Frances. I walked the Norte in May by the way.
The first day does have a convenient stop fairly early on, with the first albergue de peregrinos being something like 12km from Irun's albergue. Only 14...
For me, the food was slightly worse than the Frances, because fewer options. Expensive seafood restaurants didnt suit my budget, and pilgrim menu's are similar everywhere.
I walked alone, but always met people in the evening. No worries there.
I had a 50 day Camino on the Norte, I never did...
This might be late, I stayed there in June. Two elderly people were working here, I dont imagine they use the phone too much .. They didnt open until 3, and wouldnt accept leaving bags etc before then. I liked it, clean, cosy etc, but it didnt strike me as the kind of place you could call in...
I think its perfectly doable. Based on the experience of having recently done it.
My experience was the Portuguese was quieter. I had a day there when I didnt see anyone, and was then the only person in an albergue. That was never my experience on the Norte, and although the days could be...
