In 2022 I wrote this: There are a lot of late middle aged men on the Via. It sort of makes sense because it is the Camino for more experienced pilgrims who have time on their hands. There are younger folk but they are often stuck listening to chat about pensions and arthritis.
Everywhere is much more expensive during Semana Santa. You won’t get much sleep in Triana. I stayed there at the end of my Camino so it didn’t matter so much. Staying in your own room might be a better idea before you start.
March 4 to April 12 2022
Cool to mild most days. Some heat closer to Seville. Below zero on the Sanabres but just for a couple of hours. Some rain, but overcast a lot. Snow on the Sanabres.
All you need are layers and a pair of thinner gloves.
Interesting how the weather makes the day. I was going to take a taxi but walked up the road which had very little traffic on a beautiful day. As you say, the park was gorgeous.
I don't, but I did post a bunch on a forum (I can't remember which but you can probably find it easily) and I could add you to Facebook where I posted every day. The FB posts are mostly just pics. I have attached a couple of files. One is a summary covering basic information that might be...
I walked from March 4 to April 12 in 2022. It was cool at times, there was snowfall that didn't stay on parts of the Sanabres, and there was some rain. I would suggest that this, and perhaps the opposite shoulder season (November-December) are probably the best times to walk the Via.
The Via up to the Sanabres is largely flat with some good hilly parts. It is not as flat as some people make it out to be.
The Sanabres, on the other hand, is almost as hilly as the Norte. According to the stage profiles on Gronze, the elevation changes are very similar.
I left March 4 this year and had a couple of days rain and no flooding until Galicia. We had a small amount of snow and some rain in Galicia. We finished on April 12. Overall it was a great time to walk.
Yes, the great albergues in Galicia are on the Sanabres. As I am sure you know, the Sanabres is considerably more hilly than the VdlP. Having said that, it is also very beautiful. The number of pilgrims increase substantially from Ourense onward. For us that was partly because it was Easter...
Are you going to do the Sanabres or are you going to walk up to Astorga? There is lots og good info on the LIVE on the VdlP threads we were posting this spring. They might be helpful. The albergues in Galicia, many of which have been rebuilt or renovated, are fabulous.
I walked the VdlP in March and April this year. I flew into and out of Seville. I stayed at Triana Backpackers which is a popular pre-Via stay and I stayed there on my way home during Semana Santa (Thursday and Friday). There is no comparison. Seville during Easter is a riot of people...
I walked this year from March 4 until April 12. The weather was cool but fine, there were enough albergues etc. open and there was just the right number of pilgrims to have company and yet walk on my own. It was my third Camino and I really enjoyed it.
I would say plan for Semana Santa...
That is a very common suggestion and a common thing to do. I had planned to do just that but walked with someone instead. If it is a nice day, the walk on the road is actually quite nice. It is beautiful and there is very little traffic. Having said, make it a game day decision. It is a...
I walked the Via in March/April this year. I was afraid of the solitude and the lack of services. I spent a number of days alone but every night there was company wherever I stayed. Since the Via is longer and has fewer places to stay and fewer bars etc. you tend to see the same people or...
There is a huge Carrefour about a km down the main road from the albergue. There are also numerous ATMs if you need to get some cash. Try all of them as the charge for the transaction ranges from 9 Euro to nothing.
Hey Gordon, I would love to hear about the differences with what I say and what you experienced. Even though we intersected for a couple of weeks we definitely did things differently. You travelled with Dan every day, you were a bit slower, you stayed in different kinds of lodging and you...
