The VDLP guidebook and some useful advice for future hikers

I only used Gerald Kelly's app in March/April this year and found it fine for my needs. In conjunction with the WindyMaps app I had all I needed. ( WindyMaps app is fantastic; any moment I was unsure I could check and always find the route. It was especially good for getting in and out if towns...

    VdlP in February?

I started 1st March just gone and had more or less perfect weather. Think it is just the luck of the draw with the weather. I probably would have liked walking in February too as it was pretty hot in March this year. It definitely got colder as I went north but not so much that it was...

Just confirming that you get the key to the municipal from the bar - pleasant bar and barman. And pretty sure you can't reserve a bed. Hostal Posada is not too expensive if needed I think... Hope the rain eases off for you Annie Megg

Hi Annie The Municipal was good - had a washing machine to. Recommend the little restaurant there El Rincon I think. One pilgrim stayed in a Hostal Posada in the town so there is other accommodation available. I don't remember another Albergue though. Megg

I thought the convent had closed? And understood the Van Gogh Albergue was the only one now in Zafra...I might have that wrong. Perhaps someone else can confirm? Megg

LIVE from the Camino Annie’s partial Vdlp apr/may 2019

I stayed at Van Gogh and it sticks in my mind as one of the most unpleasant experiences on the VLDP. We were quite a few people - about 16 I think - and all downstairs - I assumed they did not want to have to clean upstairs. So we were tight on space which is a bit irritating when there IS more...

LIVE from the Camino Annie’s partial Vdlp apr/may 2019

I agree Laurie. I think someone has made a negative comment in the reports somewhere - I certainly read it when researching my trip - and it has become a bit of a bogie. I did take the taxi with three others but some on my day did not. I think perhaps one reason I did so was because I was not...

LIVE from the Camino Annie’s partial Vdlp apr/may 2019

I found Hostal Extremadura very cold - they wanted to charge us extra for heating - and souless. It was adequate but I can't say any more than that for it. Wanted to stay at the albergue with the priest but it was the day I had a terrible migraine and was all I could do to drag myself in off the...

LIVE from the Camino Leaving Seville tomorrow 2 March

Yesterday stayed at Albergue in O Outiero. Is out of the way with no close bar/cafe but super Albergue and good kitchen. Was a good night with 8 of us and quite a few of us who started at the same time and therefore finishing together which is very pleasant. Had an menu de Dia in Ponte Ulla for...

The common name for it is Rock Rose and it is plentiful in garden centres in NZ and UK

Castro Dozon to Silleda 28kms. Thankfully most of the forecasted rain did not eventuate and, save one or two bursts, we had a largely dry walk - although still very wet underfoot. Recommend the bar/cafe at Estacion Lalin. Really excellent service, coffee, food and complementary cake given with...

Cea to Castro Dozon via Oseira. Very wet today, the trail was a stream (with often deep puddles)for much of the day and feet got very wet. It seemed to stop raining and then come down again throughout the day. I was warm enough but it did make for a harder than usual walk. No food here in...

LIVE from the Camino Some info from Sevilla and onwards to Santiago (Leaving 31 Mar)

I've noticed similar, people in general older - I've frequently been the youngest in the Albergue and I turned 55 this week. There have been younger folk too but proportion of older people higher. However since Ourense have noticed quite a shift in the pilgrim population. Many more people, many...

I wasn't that taken with it Elaine. I was going to spend two nights there but wasn't allowed in the Albergue a second night and didn't feel much like finding another place so chose to leave instead. I think partly my frame of mind wasn't in city mode.

Didn't go Elaine as I have no swimsuit. I'm not much of one for heated baths as I get to hot too quickly

LIVE from the Camino Leaving Seville tomorrow 2 March

Today walked from Ourense to Cea via the left route. Stopped off at Casa Cesar and met the lovely Cesar. Was the exact right timing for a rest for me. Had my photo taken which I think must happen to everyone who stops there! Rain held off till about a half hour before I got to the Albergue at...

LIVE from the Camino Leaving Seville tomorrow 2 March

Hi Elaine It has been cold and apparently unseasonably so according to local people. I see the forecast is for continuing rain in the coming few days but the temperature is set to rise. I imagine this is the last thrust of winter happening. It often gives us one last buffeting before spring...
