You do get some really nice umbrellas from the "Bazar Chino" stores that seem to be everywhere nowadays and they are not expensive (10€ or so). My first port of call on my first day, if the weather is threatening, is to buy one of those. Unfortunately I usually have to discard it or give it away...
I usually walk in winter so an umbrella is a must for me but it also protects you from the sun in sunnier seasons but i've never used one then, preferring a large hat instead.
This thread made me remember the many times I was obliged to take off any glasses I might be wearing due to the horizontal rain on the camino I experienced! I couldn't see through the lenses and saw better with them removed. Same with sun shades, no use when it rained like that! I need three...
Well folks! I always carry a full sized cotton bath towel because I tried all these other suggestions once and hated them! The advantage is that I can also use it for privacy in a refuge if I am lucky enough to get a bunk next to a wall.
