Ingenious (to me) water bottle solution : )

While that is an ingenious system, I will maintain that filling a bottle from the faucet and putting it pack in your side pouch IS easier than filling a squeeze pouch, disconnecting your bite me, then connecting to your draw tube, pushing the water into your pouch, reconnecting your bite me...

Ingenious (to me) water bottle solution : )

Much easier to refill than a bladder. Though newer packs now make the bladder accessible without digging into the pack.

To shave or not to shave

My winter beard keeps the face warm on the mountains in CO, but goes back to the Van Dyke in Spring. I carry a razor on the Camino and shave the cheeks and neck.daily for discipline. Just a dry shave in the mirror. No need to carry shave cream.

    Hiking Sandals only?

5 Caminos in Chacos (toe loop). In the rain, and down to 40°F. A couple times in the 30s for a morning start I donned a pair of Injinji toe socks. I carry a pair of boots as backup. I’ve put the boots on a couple time during bad weather, or to give the dogs a change, but back to the Chacos...

Rain proof gloves necessary in April?

If it keeps rain out, it keeps sweat in. Sorry, Gortex. When hiking, your body produces a lot of heat. I climb a lot of mountains in the winter in CO, and hate putting on heavy gloves, as my hands just get wet inside the glove, which leads to cold. I find it better to hike with breathable wool...

What do you have to take every Camino?

When in such a predicament, you can push the knife blade straight down the center of the cork, and slowly twist. Once the cork “breaks“ free of the sides, slowly pull up while twisting and the cork will come out on the blade.

Warm clothing needed in May on Frances Way

I walked twice in late April through May and just had light base layer, quick dry shirt, and rain jacket, glove liners and buff. Layered up in the morning, peeled off before 10am. Keep in mind, you are not camping in the Pyrenees. One day up out of SJPP and then down the valley you go. Your next...

    The Packa

Got one for myself and one for the Spousal Unit. Hers is a bit loose around the pack, but I just tuck it in and she looks great. Mine fits in the original pack cover pouch on my pack, so takes up no extra room. Offers full coverage of the pack and the body, and though it is a little short in my...

Family want to track my route

I used to use MotionX, great maps and tracking, plus the live sharing. I’ve switched to Gaia GPS because it allows you to tag photos all along the route. MotionX only allowed to add one photo for the whole track. When hiking with my daughter (she has her own posse) MotionX’s live tracking let us...

Poll How heavy is your backpack?

Beer is in your belly and doesn't affect the weight of your pack.

    Raincoat or poncho?

The Packa. Double duty as a pack cover, that quickly deploys sleeves and hood into a poncho. Front zip, pit zips, collapses into its own pocket. Stuffs into the pack cover pouch of my pack, so it doesn't take up extra room. Got one for the wife, too. She wouldn't take it off...

Does anyone wear gloves for sweaty hands on hiking poles?

Buff makes some nice lightweight gloves that I've used on the Camino and year round at home. Both for hiking and for fishing. Good UV protection, rubberized grip, wicking, and quick drying. Definitely go for light colors to avoid absorbing the heat of the sun. Keep in mind, though, those...

Waterproof walking shoes or not for early Spring?

I've slogged all around the world in the cheapest leather boot the gov't could buy. And the Marines never send you anyplace without plenty of mosquitos and rain. I've hiked 3 Caminos and gotten drenched on all three for at least one or two days. Waterproof works from the outside for about two...

    WhatsApp Question

I have one contact named albergue. I just edit the number from town to town as I am unlikely to call them back after moving down the road.

Chaco sandals pros and cons? (plantar fasciitis dramas)

I can’t speak to Chacos vs PF. I wear them all the time if the temp is above 40*F here in Colorado. I took them on my first Camino as my shower shoes and apres hiking. Yes, they are heavy when in your pack. My feet were so happy in them at the end of the day, that I put my boots in the bottom of...

What is the best SIM to use

Beware the small shops selling SIM cards. I got a pair of them for my family, and as we walked out of the region, service stopped. Turns out the small local shops sell service within their region only. Got an Vodafone card in the next large town and it worked for the rest of the trip. I get a...

    Sandals.

Done two Camino's, West Highland Way and all over Colorado in Chacos. Arch support, cushioning against rocks, traction for fording, infinitely adjustable, with or without socks, never a blister, kicked many roots and rocks without striking toes, can be resoled (reChaco), and the bonus...Chaco...

Mobile phone pouch for backpack straps

Deuter has a pouch on one side of older packs, and both sides on some newer models. iPhone 5-8 fit perfectly.
