    Small Folding Knife - Buses/Trains in 2024

In 2016 I bought an Opinel carbide blade knife at the little hardware store in SJPdP and carried it for the Camino. In SdC I bought souvenir knives for my sons and mailed them all back home to the U.S. My Opinel is priceless to me! BTW, the post office in SdC was unsure if regulations would...

Pack rain cover needed with Poncho, or no?

Pack rain covers are nylon and not really even waterproof. Use a pack liner inside. Poncho will help too. Ditch the rain cover.

Backpack question: Ospreys Stratos 36L vs 44L?

I carried the 36 Stratos in 2016 from mid April to mid May, and did not carry a sleeping bag, blanket, and only a light fleece. I found I could barely fit everything in, and even had to leave a pair of long johns in the donativo box is the SJPdP municipal albergue just to have enough room to...

Best Toe Sock Liners for Hiking: Comparing Injini Coolmax and Nuwool Liners with Smartwool Merino Socks

I have used both. The wool ones are a little thicker, and I like them for colder weather, but have used them in the Summer, also. Whatever fits in your shoes the best. If you have one foot bigger than the other, as I do, you could use the wool on your smaller foot.

if you’re not tired of looking at packing lists anyone want to chime in on newbie list for april-june? (frances)

I was thinking that your time is getting close! Have a great Camino! I'd rather be in Spain than MN any day!

    Footwear

Footwear is everyone's personal conundrum. I bought and returned a few different pair from REI before Camino, and considered bringing both my Keen Targhee's and Saucony Peregrine (a half size bigger, the widest trailrunner available at that time). The weight of the Targhee's was too much, and...

if you’re not tired of looking at packing lists anyone want to chime in on newbie list for april-june? (frances)

You're welcome Peregrinas! There is a MN chapter of American Pilgrims on Camino. I have never joined but considered it. I think it costs $100. You can get a credential/pilgrim passport from them without joining tho, if you want to get that out of the way...

if you’re not tired of looking at packing lists anyone want to chime in on newbie list for april-june? (frances)

'Wishing you a Buen Camino! As a fellow Minnesota, who started on April 20, 2016 I'll chime in. You're lighter than I was, which is great. I packed my fears and brought too much first aid. I ditched the shower sandals, but had trail runners to hike in and keen sandals for around town. 'Found...

Legalities of knives in Spain and France

I bought one in the hardware/grocery store in SJPdP so I wouldn't have issues flying. I mailed it home from Santiago. It's my personal souvenir of the Camino. :)

Altra Lone Peak 4 Trail-Running Shoes?

If you're looking or are concerned about cushioning, the Altra Timp 1.5 has more cushioning than the Lone Peak 4 does. Both are a wide toe-box Zero drop shoe. I walked the Frances in Saucony Peregrine trail runners because it was the widest toe box I could find in 2016. I went to the Altra's...

Camino Fance in April / May sleeping bag question

I started from SJPdP on April 20, '16 and brought only a thin permethrin treated silk liner. It was enough, but just barely. I used some albergue blankets when available, but was not real comfortable about the cleanliness of the blankets. I slept in my clothes every night. If I get to go again...

    Walking mid-April - May 2019

2016 April 20-May 20 it rained some the first week, was dry and sunny on the Messeta, rained some the next and foggy the week to Santiago. I wore trail runners and would again. It's a mixed bag. When it was muddy you'll wish you had waterproof hiking boots, when dry and walking sidewalks and...

The One With The Most Money Wins

Love this thread, Sophie! I like the point about not being so heavy you need to lean forward, too, David. The 10% rule is a good starting point, but it certainly doesn't apply if you're not fit. For me, starting at 140 lbs. and finishing at 126 it was a moving target! My pack started at 17 lbs...

Help selecting Boots for our Walk.

Thanks Dave and all for the great thread and information. I'm wondering what balm you use and/or lubricant?

Confused about clothes for April/May on Camino Frances

Ha! I was there the day before you and it was a beautiful, warm, sunny day! I heard from some friends there was snow the next day, but hadn't seen a photo of it! :-)

Confused about clothes for April/May on Camino Frances

I walked April 20-May 20, '16. I think you're overpacking. One change of clothes to walk in and another to change into at days end while washing what you wore. Stay light. Long and short sleeves poly shirt undershirt. Long and short sleeved pocketed nylon shirt. I left the long one in the...

Smart Packing and Unexpected Backpack Items

Ha! This link is way too dangerous. I've been accused of way overpacking for canoe trips in the past, but have been bound and determined to not overpack for my first Camino. I love my gadgets though! Will be interesting to see what my first attempt of filling my pack weighs. I have 27 days to...
