    New Three-Season Layering Options

Wonderful suggestion! I have used the Outdoor Research Sleeves for sun protection (very thin, breathable, UPF50) but I hadn't considered using a warmer sleeve until you mentioned it. Makes great sense!

    New Three-Season Layering Options

You lost me at kilt, @AlwynWellington. 😂 I'm walking the California Mission Trail right now. We talked about it on the podcast so catch those episodes on YouTube here (https://bit.ly/YOUTUBE-SacredSteps) and my Facebook (www.facebook.com/Sacredstepsbook). I'll be sharing a lot more detail on...

    New Three-Season Layering Options

You make a good point but Cashmere is too warm for my three season list. I do like a heavy layer as needed in winter, thoug.

Icebreaker Merino Shirts - Now a Blend - Alternatives?

Sorry to rehash this older topic, @Robo, but I made a similar post a week or so back. If you want to get back to the fully lightweight merino, the 150wt Woolly brand & 170wt Woolx are exactly what you are remembering before all the blends came into vogue. They are on amazon. I'm not sure if I'm...

    New Three-Season Layering Options

Honestly, @PatCambridge, I wasn't a "wool guy" at first because I thought of wool as the itchy sweater I had to wear throughout the church service growing up. Fast forward a few more decades and the 150wt merino is - to me - much more comfortable on the skin than the "dri-fit" polyester, better...

    New Three-Season Layering Options

I'll be coming through your beautiful city in just weeks to begin at Mission San Diego de Ayala. Fr. Raymond has been so kind as to offer a blessing for my journey; thank you for your well wishes as well.

    New Three-Season Layering Options

I'll be walking the California Missions Trail in April 2021 and then - with a little luck - walking in the UK in the late summer: Way of St. Cuthbert, Pilgrims Way from London to Canterbury, and then beginning the Via Francigena from Canterbury into Europe towards Rome. In 2022, I'd like to...

    New Three-Season Layering Options

No offense taken, @lt56ny. My goal is to walk with two shirts and two layering pieces for all three-season weather. Lightweight gear is more expensive; no way around that if it's your aim. Sales, clearance, closeouts, and used gear are worth finding. My last pack weight for the Camino was...

    New Three-Season Layering Options

Thanks so much. Hope this helps a bit on brands, as I've definitely been keeping the delivery driver busy this past year. For those who may not have fallen in love with Merino wool yet, the advantages are considerable: Retains warmth even when wet from rain / perspiration / etc. Naturally...

    New Three-Season Layering Options

Full kit is over at my blog. I thought it best not to link a bunch of items so that the post wasnt deemed commercial. I got into headaches once for too many links to on a kit post with amazon, decathlo, and rei, etc.

    New Three-Season Layering Options

I know layering comes up *a lot* but with advances in textiles and new products coming to market every year, I've spent more time than I would care to admit re-working my layers for both pilgrimage and my non-supported walks on the Appalachian and Florida Trails. I'm headed to the California...

Wimpy Merino Shirts, Or Is It Just Me

Plenty of good comments here. I will briefly add: I've had great luck with ultralight/lightweight merino shirts (less than 180 thread) worn in direct contact with the backpack. Several have been used fairly heavily for years. The better brands for me seem to be WOOLLY and WOOLX. The premiere...

    Shoes to relax in

My preferred are ultralight water/shower shoes. Ridiculously light, highly breathable, quick-drying, and less than $20 USD - you can wear them comfortably around town or in the showers to prevent infection. Right now I prefer the lacing kind but my previous were just stretch shoes. I have a...

Bedbug Free Nights on the Camino

I hope it works as well for you as it has for me. It is definitely a warm-weather liner - won't be great in the colder months because it is so lightweight. The liner can be re-treated with permethrin. A company (Insect Shield) offers per item pricing for treatment. I have sent them my shirts...

Bedbug Free Nights on the Camino

For those of you preparing your packing lists for the Camino, I come to sing the praises of the Sea to Summit Traveller Adapter Bed Liner with Insect Shield from my previous experience on the Camino and from backpack trekking in hostels worldwide. The STS Traveller Adapter is a great liner for...

    Absolute Bare Minimum Packing List

We likely have different opinions on the applicability of the OP's question then: the absolute bare minimum.

    Absolute Bare Minimum Packing List

I think your comment illustrates the point of the ABSOLUTE BARE MINIMUM. From an absolute perspective, you don't need to pack something you ((( could ))) need if it can be picked up along the way ((( if ))) you need it. Just as I wouldn't back a tuxedo; I can pick that up along the way if I...

    Absolute Bare Minimum Packing List

In terms of absolute bare minimum, Tim Evans at www.roadwalking.com is an excellent example of "how low can you go". Here's my take on bare minimum - meaning I could cut everything else but not that I would: CARRY 6L Fanny pack to carry all gear - backpack is too much Dr Bonners Soap 2oz...
