Bugs / Insects on Route Frances

IMHO, Avoidance works best, followed by a strong, constant breeze. Mosquitoes (and black flies?) don't like the hot sun. Might help explain so few along the Frances. They like shade, and are more likely at dusk, overnight and early morning. Mosquitoes need standing water to reproduce (lay...

Bugs / Insects on Route Frances

David61: Does size matter? I used to think that small sand flies and black flies were the worst until I visited the UNESCO sites in Labrador where the giant mosquitoes are so big that some people, like salmon fly fishers, have been known to wear upper body nets. There might be a picture on this...

Free protein. That was the rationale when mosquitoes were attracted to the heat when cooking pancakes. :)

Bugs / Insects on Route Frances

We have never had any problem with bugs on any Camino. Head nets remind me of a friend who had an allergic reaction to what ever he had trapped inside the head net. From our fairly remote wilderness location, it took two days to get him to a cart track and eventual hospital.

Any Advice about how to strengthen my knees for down hills.

"I may not be fast, but I am slow." works in hills and all Caminos.

Any Advice about how to strengthen my knees for down hills.

Excellent advice. Progressive ankle, knee, thigh, hip pain, eventually led me to a very experienced Pedorthist. He provided a detailed diagnosis and prescription to my family doctor and provided a referral, along with detailed notes on foot and leg alignment/injury issues, to an experienced...

Any Advice about how to strengthen my knees for down hills.

In addition to the constructive suggestions above, I found that walking Caminos with an ample supply of Ibuprofen worked well for me. I use the anti-inflammatory as a preventative measure when on a Camino. Carrying as little weight as possible helps a great deal. My pack is so light that...

    Effectively Avoiding Blisters

After trying blister prevention advise over several caminos, with marginal success, I found Rebecca's advice and videos on blister prevention to be the best. Wish I had found them two years earlier! Prevention starts with understanding precisely what blisters are and what causes them. Taking a...

First timer tips afterwards - blister

Great advice. Omnifix or similar dressing retention tape in a 30 cm wide roll is versatile as a preventive measure, or to hold bandage, gauze, gel pads in place or to reduce that curling edge on some bandages and things like hydrocolloid bandages (compeed). Very versatile. For me, prevention...

Recommendations for Foot Glide to Prevent Blisters During Camino Walk

2Toms and Engo blister patches worked well for me - Thanks Dave :) I wonder what experience anyone had with Sportslick? In addition to preventing blisters, chafing, rashes with waterproof (siliconized) moisturizer, it also contains an antibacterial (Triclosan) and antifungal (Tonaftate) to...
