    Epsom salt substitutes for muscles

Reminds me of a time 50 years ago (shocking thought!) when we used to use vinegar bandages on the swollen legs of our horses and ponies. It was considered a good cooling procedure for windgalls etc. After a show or exercise we'd hose down the legs and then put on bandages over gamgee (sort of...

How much stair climbing in last 100 km?

<<Sarria has the single longest stairway, if I recall correctly. It is both scenic and memorable. To leave Sarria from the city center, it is necessary to walk these long stairs. >> Only if you start in Sarria. You can start at Barbadelo or Morgade and still qualify for your compostela.

    Epsom salt substitutes for muscles

Magnesium also helps with that horrid twitchy jumpy leg thing.

Curious about achievability of Camino at 50, slow walker

One more thing to consider - you don't actually have to start from Sarria! You can shave off a few km - up to 2.5 days of walking at 6km per day (and avoiding a couple of steepish hills leaving Sarria) - if you start at Barbadelo or even Morgade. Casa Morgade is 101 km from Santiago de...

    Swollen ankles/feet

After your shower, spray cold water over them for several minutes (as long as you can bear it). And elevate as much as possible. Rotate your ankles. And keep drinking water. You may find your feet will sweat a lot, excreting excess fluid, but you do need to keep up your fluid intake to flush out...

    Plantar Fasciitis has returned...

I am walking at the moment with plantar fasciitis in my right foot. I've had it on my heel before, this time it's further forward under the arch. I have orthotics and gel insoles. I also strap it daily using KT tape. This really helps. You can see videos online showing you how It's not so...

    Smashed toe

Ice and Arnica. Arnica is wonderful for healing bruises quickly. Just dab the cream on a few times a day. It brings out the bruising quickly and speeds up the process. Sometimes it can feel better if you tape the injured toe to the one next to it for support. Good luck, and hope it feels...

not very often discussed minor discomforts, "heat rash" and blisters on hands

I do plan to try different socks, but I have experienced it before, when wearing sandals (and bare legs) on visits to Florence and Barcelona. It's obviously something I am prone to, and I'll just have to grin and bear it (though not bare it for fear of revolting others!).

not very often discussed minor discomforts, "heat rash" and blisters on hands

I also suffer from that rash, it's known as 'Golfer's Vasculitis'. Pharmacies and doctors will prescribe a steroid cream which helps the symptoms a bit, but doesn't stop it happening. I shall be wearing thinner wool socks this time, take off my boots more during the day, and try to use ice/wet...

Ankle injury just before my camino starts

I'm very impressed with kinesiology tape. Google 'kinesiology tape for a sprained ankle' to see how to apply the tape. Could be worth getting a roll or two for use once the worst of the swelling has gone down to give you the support your ankle will need. Good luck, and Buen Camino.

    Back issues-stenosis

Gosh, your problems sound awful and I feel bad for making a fuss about my experience. You sound pretty fit though - a good level of core strength is supposed to help. My pains were worse for movement, yes. I start on 17th September so you will be ahead of me. Have you got travel insurance...

    Back issues-stenosis

LVDWD... In January this year after an excruciating Christmas and New Year period which I don't remember much of due to strong painkillers (!) I was diagnosed with foraminol stenosis, disc and facet joint degeneration. I also had a bulging disc which was causing sciatica which went right down...

    Back issues-stenosis

I suffer from this and am interested in any responses. I had injections which have really helped, though not totally solved the problem. Will post back later with more as have to go to work now.
