    Dodgy knee

I agree, shoes made a huge difference to me. The ones my knees preferred were Altra Timps or Altra Lone Peaks. I think the zero-drop were what helped.

    Dodgy knee

They work for me, for sure. I played netball for years (one of the worst sports in the world for knees) and had a knee reconstruction after I tore my left ACL and MCL. Also spinal fusion surgery a few years later. My knees really struggled on my first Camino but have gotten better with each...

Haglund's Deformity/lump on back of heel

Wow guys, I'm so thankful for your input and care. Thankyou so much for taking the time to make such great suggestions. My Dad's feet are going great guns in Hoka Bondis. Because he has a serious, rather scary-looking pronation problem and Haglund's, these were a godsend with their soft...

Haglund's Deformity/lump on back of heel

Thanks for all your advice and ideas everyone - sandals are an excellent idea, except i'm not sure how supportive they'd be? My Dad's overpronotion on the foot he has the HD is very pronounced (possibly the cause of the HD in the first place) and I believe he really needs a stabilising shoe...

Haglund's Deformity/lump on back of heel

We'll start walking from Leon in mid-April, so I fear it might be too cold for sandals for this Aussie country guy with very limited long-distance hiking experience... ;) He did find the sandals that he wore after he got the huge blister in December comfortable...but that was during a 35 degree...

Haglund's Deformity/lump on back of heel

Thanks @davebugg - pretty certain they're low height...looks like a shoe, not a boot. We've encouraged him to see a podiatrist/physiotherapist but being a 72 year old man living in a rural area, he's not the best at seeking help! He does like Compeeds which I introduced him to in December for a...

Haglund's Deformity/lump on back of heel

Hi there, My father has a large lump on the back of his heel, we think it is probably Haglund's Deformity. He bought a pair of Oboz Sawtooths, causing quite the painful, deep blister on his morning walks. The Sawtooth seems to be quite a rigid shoe. We wonder if anyone could recommend a shoe...

    Bad knees

Really love the love and sharing of advice on this page. I think all the tips i could think have been shared. My saviours were kinesio/rock tape, ice ice and more ice, and pack transport (until i was strong enough to carry it). I was really interested in the idea of 'learning to walk' again...

    knees -- braces?

I second kinesio tape. I injured my knees on my first Camino - right one came good pretty quickly but my left has never been the same (considering I'd had a knee reconstruction 9 years prior, probs not a surprise). But i managed to finish the CF and then walk Camino Portuguese doing these...

How do you know when to call it/give up?

I just want to say two things: 1. This is one of the kindest, most compassionate, supportive threads ive ever read - you're all beautiful! 2. Im sorry you're experiencing this Alvin and good luck! I really hope your Camino is a meaningful experience for you. Please keep us updated :)
  13. katie@camino

    Well this sucks-possible stress fracture

Don't stress about not training - you will still be able to walk the Camino. I think the chances of re-injury/non-healing will increase the more you train. I have heard it said that most people who walk a Camino do not train. You are putting a lot of stress on your body to get you through the...

    Knee problem: advice por favor!!

Thankyou again for your response. It sounds like I have been spared the pain your wife obviously went through - my symptoms appear to be much more mild. I have had terrible musculoskeletal problems in the past (including spinal fusion 3 years ago) and am anxious to prevent my body ruining yet...
