I'm reading this totally out of context, as I'm just surfing the website this evening, but I can say that the Arles-Somport-Aragones-Puente La Reina route was one of my very favorites. I did it between September and October last year, and other than the very beginning between Arles and...
I agree it's a solitary walk, but it is very satisfying to be able to do it on your own too, both from a physical and spiritual/mental/psychic perspective. Yes, you will have to ask yourself how dependent you are on meeting other people, and how comfortable you are being with yourself a good...
The Arles route through the mountains is absolutely a must, weather and level of fitness permitting. So too, the lack of crowds is sheer pleasure.
That said, the only problem with that is that, absent changing your own planned route/pace, you can't help but keep bumping into (and shaking off...
As I just posted elsewhere, it turned out that the mountain portion to Castres was much easier than I had thought it would be, and absolutely beautiful. Wouldn't have missed this for anything! The weather was perfect, but were it wet, parts of this trail could be dangerous. Counting my blessings!
Hi Michael from Castres! Sadly, the mountains have ended :(. Turns out the walk (other than the hot first days in the Camargue) has been a piece of cake - once again illustrating the problem with overthinking about these walks (and reading too many posts online) while still at home. As a...
I don’t think I’ll be walking faster than you Michael :). I will try to do bite-sized stages during the steeper parts, of at all possible. Do you recall how far, in a pinch, are bail out points to roads along the way? Thank you again!
Alex
Hi Michael - this really is a fantastic thread, thank you! Can you recommend 'must stay' gites along the way? Also, it seems that there are five days of really steep, difficult walking but the rest is a bit easier, no? I walked from Oloron over to Jaca last year, so I'm familiar with that...
and I'm off to the races next sunday - i saw somewhere that there are a couple of 'must stay' gites/auberges on the voie d'arles - i seem to recall one that a lot of folks miss because they stay at another one in the same town - don't want to miss out on any of these, so could someone please...
I kinda wish you hadn't told me that :) Oh well - it looks like that's about five stages/days. My German Rother Wanderfuehrer breaks a few of the stages down to shorter ones (not all though), and yep, it does say it can be slippery when wet. Hmmm. Are there bail out places (maybe to a road...
Old thread, but I’m tentatively planning this one starting around Sept 10. Break the news to me gently - how tough is this one? (Ice already walked from Oloron-Ste Marie to Jaca.
