    The Pilgrim’s Guide to Etiquette

Lost & Found Take care of your gear!

I said "anyTHING." Not anyBODY!" Maybe that's why I avoid walking with family members?

Lost & Found Take care of your gear!

Don't bring anything on the Camino that you can't afford to lose.

    Musical instruments on the Camino.

A lot of people bring guitars on the camino. Some of them know how to play them.

Listening to Music/Audiobooks/Podcasts while making the pilgrimage?

Silence is God's first language. If you are here to seek God's voice, you gotta stop drowning your mind in media and music and noise and news. The pilgrimage is a prime opportunity to Simplify. Quiet your mind. Step into silence. If you feel called to make the Camino pilgrimage, your spirit is...

    Pilgrimage or vacation?

Just lay that down and walk away from it.

    Bar etiquette

I will bring back a cup and a saucer, but nothing more than that. I have been told more than once "that's my job! If you keep doing that, I will be out of work..."

    Volunteering as a Hospitalero/a

I was a HOSVOL volunteer trainer for three years. We called these students "workshoppers." The came to the training without any intention of serving... IMHO, they were wasting our time and resources. We are not in the weekend workshop "self-enrichment" entertainment business. We train people to...

    Latest Camino Fad .

there are all kinds of inflatable shapes available, why stop at boring old balloons? Fill up your travel pillow with helium, or your kid's paddle pool! How about one of those adult-toy life-size dolls? Take a load off your back, and be the life of the party, too! Just don't try to check Debbi...

    RIP @annakappa

Anna and FraLuchi stayed with us years ago. When her husband got too long-winded and 'splainy,' Anna would stand behind his chair, waving her hands just like he waved his, and making faces! They were quite a pair. Gracious and full of stories. May they rest in peace.

    Zabaldika donativo

Yes it's true. Like most non-profits and donativos, and they don't accept reservations. Other guidebooks and apps will confirm that, too.

    Bourbon and cigars

Here in Moratinos we now have Jim Beam as well as Four Roses. We've come a loooong way in 18 years. When we first arrived there was only the white lightning orujo made in Esteban's barn, and the "interesting" local vino tinto made in Manolo's bodega cave.

When Posting Reviews on Gronze . . .

IMHO, a donativo/non-profit albergue should not be subject to "reviews," because it's not in the hotel business. It's not a business at all, it is a dedicated charitable institution, there to serve a particular population in need. It's a little like giving ratings to homeless shelters... or...

    2023 HosVol albergue report

When you consider the amount of coordination and labor that goes into that, your mind boggles. Hats off to Hosvol!

    Bourbon and cigars

When in Spain, drink what the Spaniards drink... when they want whisk(e)y, it's usually Scotch. Bourbon is not a thing here. Don't expect "selections" of things nobody but you wants to drink.

    Bourbon and cigars

A brand of bourbon is available in just about any Spanish bar: it's called Four Roses. The label says it's from Kentucky, but I have my doubts... back in my American days I was a fan of nice bourbon. This is just OK, but when I get the yen, it's there for me. (Bars in larger towns sometimes have...

The “new normal” isn’t necessarily bad

Just an FYI: If you walk in May you may beat the heat, but you will be part of a great traffic jam. May and September are full-capacity months on the Way, especially the Frances and Primitivo, too.

Spanish Induction Stove Tops...Alien Tech? or How to operate controls?

Induction stove technology comes from Westinghouse R&D lab in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania, USA. Hardly "alien technology," but then, I'm from Pittsburgh, and I'm an alien...
