The right to access for guide dogs and other assistance dogs is governed by the Autonomous Communities, and while the rights for guide dogs is universal, it appears not to be the same for all assistance dogs. See https://perrosguia.once.es/legislacion/derecho-de-acceso-1 for discussion on this.
I walked this after rain last year, and agree about it being muddy and needs to be taken with a little more care if it is like that. But I walked the 'normal' route the year before, and I would only do that if the complementary route was closed, eg due to flooding.
There is a taxonomic hierarchy that many of us ignore when we are travelling.
first and foremost we are travellers
some people will be travelling for employment now, study for future employment, attending work related conferences, etc, and they are a separate class.
if we are travelling in...
I don't expect that people I meet in the normal course of my life to have a highly nuanced understanding of undertaking a pilgrimage. However, those that I did work closely with when I was still working did get a better understanding over the years, as have close friends.
My local Friends of...
My wife and I stayed there in 2016. The albergue is in a complex of buildings with other uses, but when we were there the albergue dormitories were for pilgrims, not locals. I cannot speak for other buildings in the complex.
This is most kind, but I find myself guided by the biblical injunction:
So I am just a little selfish. I tend to look to my own welfare in these matters, and let my friends fend for themselves :)
@David Tallan, I could not make sense of the post from @Scott Sweeney, but didn't think it appropriate to do other than the obvious proof reading correction that I proposed. Scott has been given the opportunity to explain what he meant. I think it is now up to him to clarify his post.
I thought of doing this, but getting another credential was always a more attractive option than losing the opportunity to keep collecting stamps where I stopped. They are only a couple of euro. I now start a longer camino with at least two spare that I then tape to the original as they fill up.
You don't need to do what is 'usual' provided you get the minimum of two each day after Sarria on the CF and the other 100 km towns on other routes. On my first camino I got one each day, and then didn't remember to get the required two after Sarria. Not recommended.
After that I started to...
I have met a few people who have done this over the years. There are places, like Ponferrada or Leon, where you could walk a different route, or you could just catch a bus or train to join the new route at a place of your choosing. My only caution is that if you wish to receive the Compostela...
I do the same, but have rarely run out. There are some longer stretches between towns on the CF where one needs to be more careful. Some people rely on refilling smaller water bottles in every village, and that might work. The risk is that fonts won't have been turned on quite so early if they...
The message that I see goes something like 'Sorry, unavailable for your dates on our site'. I have never seen a message that claims the property is full on booking.com or other booking engines when I have used them. Perhaps less regular travellers mis-interpret this message to mean that the...
On Easter Sunday a small group of us walked up to the ridge line overlooking the Orroral Valley, one of the earliest places where Europeans settled to the south of Canberra, and later the site of one of the satellite tracking stations used by NASA during the moon landings.
Granite tors...
These were my actuals from walking the route!! I don't recall avoiding any large hills, certainly not to the extent that would account for nearly 4000 m of climb. I think I would have noticed that :)
Out of curiosity, I used the CNIG tracks. Without the complementary route to Oseira, from...
My actuals from 2023:
Sanabres (from Ourense): 120 km, 3030m of ascent
Variante (from Valenca)" 148 km walking, 3162 m of ascent.
'
Edit: steepest slopes were after Ourense, Oseira and Ponte Ulla. 17% over about 7.5 km, 15% over 2.3 km and 12% over 5 km respectively, although averages on those...
This reminds me of a long standing joke in the project management community when discussing getting a project to deliver a high quality outcome, on time and within budget. It can be good and cheap, but late, good and on time, but over budget, or on time and on budget, but rubbish. It will never...
I try and keep a lowish profile these days. I am getting ready to return to the Gudbrandsdalsleden after 12 years of doing other routes, and walking up the western shores of the lakes after leaving Oslo.
