Inspired as ever by Laurie aka Peregrina2000, I head off on the Sagunto in two weeks. It’s a 72nd birthday celebration and treated myself to a new 34 litre pack to downsize. However, the last three days are 40 kms each as accommodation is a serious issue, with no Camino infrastructure.
Great to...
Oh yes… Paderborn! The welcome there..I was made to sit DOWN and given juice and biscuits BEFORE I had to hand over my Credencial and some dinero!
Plus the first clothes spin-dryer encountered on any Camino. So ‘nett und typisch Deutsch’!
Nice one! Got me thinking from an air-con albergue at Almatoz on the Ruta de la Lana:
1. Guemez - a real community spirit. I was given a ‘goblin’ chalet!
2. Grañon - the most spiritual place. Packed but happy to sleep on the chapel floor! The communal meal with the priest was memorable…

.... I hiked past there in late October last year and am pleased to report that the family have built a great hotel next door with bar, comedor, garden and rooms. The Albergue was open too! I too was so well received in about 2012.

Thanks Rick! You are quite correct. I have a fondness for ‘miradors’ at the best of times. Here is a further array of bagpipes from the cute local craft historical museum in Melide.
A well-earned lunch at Portomarin at a hostelry recommended by a local. With a view ‘sans pareil’. Zamburina selected in honour of Laurie R. who recommended them.
Early on in this discussion, reference was made to a Swedish tentmaker, Hilleberg and the solo ‘Akto’ at 1.7 kgs. I purchased same about six years ago and the first time I used it at 2am at midsummer in Sweden, it was with ease that I put it up. It was not cheap, but National Trust membership...
Just back from a week on the Pennine Way, carrying tent and food. Apart from day walkers, met only one thru’ hiker...
Had to stop due to sub zero nighttime temperatures and absence of facilities....
To be continued! It was an alternative to heading from Alméria to Granada.
... and this reminds me of staying in the former infirmary within the confines of the bullring in La Roda on the Camino de Levante. (an unforgettable experience!)
In one corner of the whitewashed and basic room was a collection of spray cans of yellow paint and metal cut-out stencils of arrows...
Takes me back to boarding school in Jersey in the 50’s....
I believe that the lions are technically not dead but ‘couchant’ (a heraldic term).
I date my tooth fillings to that period unfortunately!
Jordan’s make good muesli bars ...
Personally, I prefer protein bars and I get them in Decathlon stores. The advantage is that they are less sweet, more sustaining and in addition available in Spanish Decathlon’s and Decathlon City mini stores (ie Caceres and Santiago for instance).
With...
Retreating to the initial post of this Railway thread, my memories of Antwerp station stem from the fabulous novel Austerlitz by W. G. Sebald. I recommend.
Whilst on the subject of books, I am so grateful to members of the Forum for bringing to my attention The Great Westward Walk by Antxon...
Gare de l’Est in Paris has the largest oil painting imaginable hung up high in the entrance booking hall, above the arch giving access to the platforms. By Albert Herter, an American who lost a son in WW1; donated in 1926. Worth a mini pilgrimage as it is very moving...
I see Greenland mentioned so I might as well add my input.
I bought a Hilleberg Akto to hike in the Arctic Circle in Northern Sweden and subsequently on the St Olav’s Way in Norway. Pairs its way in no time.
It is the Rolls Royce of Swedish tents (though amazingly ‘crafted’ in Estonia). Light...
Well, I managed to find this taken at the end of April 2018 on the ‘hill’. It was a very long day as accommodation was hard to find! Also very cold. Memorable though!
Valencia station is another winner! Camino de Levante
Gare de Lyon in Paris as start for reaching Route de Vézelay (used in film Travels with My Aunt. Le Train Bleu restaurant up the staircase is a must...
