Casa Rural's are the best for food and accommodation. You will always get a wonderful meal, the rooms are always good and the wine is always better. If ever I walk the CF again I will try and stay in as many CR as possible. It will cost you more but the experience is worth it.
I was attacked by a dog on the Le Puy route, I still have the ripped waterproof trousers, if it was not for my wife striking the dog with her walking pole I fear I would have been seriously injured. Not all dogs are nice so beware.
Nice to think that is how it is but it is not always so. Last year between Condom and SJPDP on the Le Puy route I had been walking with a Frenchman for a few days when he asked me what I did before I retired. When I replied that I had been a house painter his attitude towards me changed. Within...
Being from Australia where restaurant staff are paid a proper wage and do not have to rely on tips for a living, we find it difficult to tip in Europe. So we do what we do in Australia, tip if the service is exceptional but the staff do not expect it. Enjoy Portugal, it's wonderful.
I think the infrastructure on the CF has a lot to do with how popular it is. Where else in the world can you walk for 800km and get amazing scenery, a meal and a bed every 5 to 8 km. Plus great wine and good food if you avoid the pilgrim menu. I will be back!
For a number of reasons you may only walk one Camino so why not walk the most loved one. The Camino Frances is just such a wonderful pilgrimage you will never regret walking it. It sets you up to walk again.
Two Casa Rurals come to mind.
(1) Casa Rural El Molino, a bit off route but they will pick you up and drop you back at Hornillos. The food and the wine were to die for.
(2) Casa El Cura at Calzada de los Hermanillos. Excellent food, great wine and one of the best host on the Camino.
We had such...
There is a reason why it is expensive, I always insure with an Australian travel insurance company connected to a major Australian insurance company, they pay up on claims. I have first hand experience.
In 2014 we walked with Hanna from California on the Camino Frances when she was 79. In 2015 at 80 years of age Hanna joined us at Le Puy to walk the Le Puy route to SJPDP. This year she walked by herself from Lisbon on the Portuguese Camino to Santiago. So Jan if you are fit don't worry about...
We have used them three times, Caroline is one of the best operator's servicing the Camino. Even better now that she has an office near the pilgrims office.
