Telephone calls from Spain to Home?

Telephone calls from Spain to Home?

People make it really difficult. More than it needs to be. I prefer Orange or Vodafone in Spain and Portugal, respectively. I still recommend calling Verizon to verify your phone is unlocked. It doesn't hurt to be sure.

Telephone calls from Spain to Home?

Rosemary, I have Verizon with an iPhone 4S and I'll tell you what I did. I called Verizon and asked to have them unlock my phone. Then when I got to Spain, I went to an Orange store and said in my broken Spanish "necesito una SIM card por mi iPhone. Mucho internet, no telefono" I paid 10€ for...

True NicoZ but for $25 on a SIM card in Spain you get at least 1GB of data. If you want overpay for services, go for it. I think everyone should hear both sides and make their own decision based on their needs. Since the forum is so incredibly slow, I'll probably not respond much more to...

Point is, using a SIM card in country is not a hassle and it's cheaper than Verizon's measly 100mb of data. I use Skype to talk to family. It's free and used very little of my data. I did keep track. iMessages don't count against your text message allotment either. I never stood in line...

Good for you. Walk your own walk. I know for a fact if I had not had my phone on my last walk I would have been screwed. If you read my blog post I shared you would know why. I also know you only get one first Camino. I'll be interested to hear how it goes a second time around. I know my two...

Verizon's international data plan is a complete rip off. FYI.

Here's an old blog post that should answer your questions: http://renegadepilgrim.com/renegadepilgr/2013/2/1/camino-tech-talk-cell-phones-on-the-camino

I haven't used a Spot. I just text (iMessage) or email family from the Camino. It's cheaper and lighter. SIM cards are cheap in Spain. So is the unlimited data plans. I understand the allure of the Spot but for the Camino it's overkill.

    Plastic bags and snorers

Yep. Tis true. It wouldn't hurt to carry earplugs to hand out but I doubt you'd want to carry the weight! ;) Walk your own walk. I try to stay away from too much information. All it does is cloud your experience. I'm thankful I didn't read too much about the Camino before I walked.

    Plastic bags and snorers

Well since Santo Domingo is no longer donativo, maybe they've changed the rules. Too bad. I really liked that place. :( Especially the old albergue.

    Plastic bags and snorers

I was a hospitalera in Santo Domingo. I can assure you we did not have a snoring room. We were under strict orders on how to fill the rooms. It might be different based on who the hospitaleros are but we did not want to rock the boat. That's the deal. Every person has a different experience...

Some Links for Learning Basic Spanish

Google translate worked very well when I was a hospitalera...we would type in "No, we are not the tourism office, they are next door" and then the speaker would pronounce it. I also liked using the phrase "We are volunteers. Please don't yell at us for not speaking Spanish." Ah yes, the joys...

Some Links for Learning Basic Spanish

If anyone is using DuoLingo and wants to be "friends", my username is the same as here. I'm just starting and am on level 2 right now I think. They have an app for the iPhone now and it makes it very easy to study when I have free time at work or when I am off work during the day. I am really...

    Permanent Spanish Residency

That's what I was thinking...apparently no one knows how crappy the US Economy really is...I don't know too many people with income that would allow them to buy a place in Spain, much less want to deal with the red tape to do so....

    Permanent Spanish Residency

I'm working on my Italian citizenship instead...EU passport is a good thing to have for staying longer than 90 days...(well, at least until the EU dissolves. :( )

Why has "No Money" topic pilgrim created such controversy?

First off, I have spent time in Thailand. You can live like a KING on $870/month. Especially in Chiang Rai. Sorry, the poverty thing isn't going to fly with me... And to reiterate what everyone else has said, you can't really "camp" on the Camino... That being said, to respond to Tracy's...

Still needed urgently: Little Fox Sitter...

Oh, and another thought...again, from another forum I am on...contributing members get access to the entire forum, while others who do not contribute only get access to the "basics". This isn't rocket science. Spend enough time on different forums and you'll find all kinds of great ideas out...

I am not willfully misunderstanding anything...I understand more than you think I do. ;)

Still needed urgently: Little Fox Sitter...

No offense Ivar, but Tracy's place is somewhere pilgrims SHOULD know about. It is NOT a commercial enterprise, she has to work a "real" job just to stay afloat. I can't tell you how many people I've told about it via other sites (mostly on FB) who loved the idea and are going to try to fit it...
