I had just one mooment of doubt - had a very heavy cold in Loen, and lay awake in bed at night asking myself if I really wanted to soldier on... Got up next morning and forgot all about it and went on the have three wonderful caminos (and hope to have more)...
In your position, i would probably...
Like most respondents to your initial inquiry, the issue of potential theft/robbery is, IMHO, grossly overestimated...
While I do not wish to trivialise the impact that the few reported occurrences of theft have on their victims - losing one's passport and money is another country is a major...
I agree... A little humility goes a long way.
I speak few words of Spanish/Espanol, and I can recall only two occasions in three caminos when I was made to feel uncomfortable for being unable to converse in spanish - once by a very bored young lady taking my booking in an albergue and the...
possibly still there because it is impractical and uneconomic to remove them... and ploughing machinery can be hard-surfaced to better deal with abrasive soils.
Nightmare? maybe a little of an exaggeration...
I recall noting in 2017 that a fall on the descent into Zubiri would be quite uncomfortable but I didn't feel in mortal danger. In 2018, I didn't even notice it...
Yes, if one is uncertain of their footing, a fall is a possibility, but with due...
This is the one... Same fountain but now has the second and lower sign advising, somewhat cryptically, that the tap at the back is the potable water...
Should you carry a water filter?
Short answer - No.
Long answer - No - unless you have some medical condition which makes you particularity susceptible to water borne infection...
I carry an 850 ml bottle and ensure it is full before I start in the morning, and if it is a hot day, I refill if...
Pamplona, Burgos and Leon are obvious candidates for a day or two off - sightseeing, coffee, local food, resting...
With a little research, you may be able to find local festivals and markets in towns that you would otherwise just pass through - often good for a 'rest day'.
I think Sarria has...
Walked CF 2017 and CP 2019 with my wife, and I can say with complete honesty that I didn't even see any substantive issues arising before we left and with one exception. not during the camino or on the return home - but then we had been married for 25 years, so I guess a lot of the rough edges...
I walked CF 2018 at the age of 70. Walked with a neighbour who was unsure of how his legs/feet would cope (he had major issues as a young man) so we took things easy - SJPPP-Orisson-Roncesvalles-Zunbiri-Zabildika-Pamplona - to start with. His legs/feet coped and I felt bullet-proof - so it took...
Have walked both...
Steeper option was (initially) quite bouldery, and would be slippery if damp - walking sticks would be a advantage, but not totally necessary... It is a very pleasant walk through the trees along a well made gravel pathway once i got past the steep bouldery section.
Less...
Actually three options (I gather) ...
The 'conventional' route along the floor of the valley, walking beside a major highway
The Pradela (described above) - turn right up a steep path just after the bridge over the river.
The Dragonate (to the left of the conventional route), and reportedly...
Better get used to seeing fries on your plate... They are everywhere...
That said, the chef at Salceda Albergue Turistico does a mean potato mash - worth staying there just for that!
I agree - the toughest day in CF for me, but well worth it.
I bypassed Albergue Lama in favour of booked accommodation in Casa Susi in Trabedelo... Bad move, as I found no water supplies after Villafranca and was quite dehydrated by the time I got to Casa Susi!
My experience (of three caminos) has been that most dogs choose to be oblivious to the passage of pilgrims (not even worth raising an eyebrow...) - but cars and tractors were good for chasing...
Those dogs that did get excited about the approach of pilgrims were inevitably behind a fence.
