    Compostela Craziness!

I read his post six times. How much listening do I have to do before I get to ask a question?

    Compostela Craziness!

Have I mistakenly assumed that a forum was a place for discussion?

    Compostela Craziness!

You lost me here. There is time to chat up pilgrims and answer questions but not enough time to ask "Can I see your credencial" and see if their name is legibly written? I'm pretty sure if you started with the third person in the queue, you could keep ahead of the pack and still have time...

Stones at Cruz de Ferro and Crosses on Fences

Hi Paula, Leaving a small stone on cairns on mountain passes is an ancient tradition but leaving them specifically at the site of the Cruz de Ferro, in the amount that is left there....? that's most likely a more modern tradition. One day, when you have walked your first Camino past this site...

    Will the camino excitement die?

That may possibly be true at some point in the future but certainly not in my lifetime or, more precisely, "... in the lifetime of my legs." I plan on walking at least one pilgrimage every year, although they won't all end in Santiago. My walks are "pilgrimages" though and they all have some...

    Compostela Craziness!

You may not understand why I get tired from the rants against leaving stones at the Cruz de Ferro or wearing the pilgrim shell during the Camino but at least we can commiserate in a shared misery!

    Random helpful advice

A very useful part of my kit is a long length of parachord and some small paper binder clips. Whether staying in albergues or private accommodations, it is handy almost every single day for drying clothes. In albergues, I usually arrive after all the lines are already in use. In other places...

Issues with the Pilgrim's Office in Santiago

I'm not sure how many pilgrims received their compostelas when you collected your previous ones but there were probably about 1,500 on the 24 May 2017. That might be a big increase over your previous visits in 2011 and 2015. 1.5 hours was shorter than when I got mine in 2014 but I picked...

Issues with the Pilgrim's Office in Santiago

Umm... That's not true. http://blogs.findlaw.com/law_and_life/2014/02/do-you-have-to-carry-id-with-you-at-all-times.html https://www.quora.com/In-the-US-under-what-situations-are-you-legally-required-to-carry-identification I also wish I had pictures of the sign in the pilgrim office.

Issues with the Pilgrim's Office in Santiago

I certainly had to show my passport a few weeks ago. There is a sign (near the front, not the back of the line) at the pilgrim's office that says to present the passport / ID to the person issuing the Compostela.

Issues with the Pilgrim's Office in Santiago

Thanks for pointing this out to other potential pilgrims who otherwise might not have known of the requirement. I think the reason it has not been raised before because a lot of the pilgrims are from the EU or other countries that are required to carry ID at all times. Other pilgrims may be...

Issues with the Pilgrim's Office in Santiago

Your tour company didn't say anything about this requirement? They should have known it.

    Pilgrim Mass

It swung at the beginning of your mass? I've never seen that. Does anyone know when they do that, as opposed to using it at the end of the mass, just before the final blessing? My story has nothing to do with you, I am sure, but your comment reminded me of something from a two weeks ago - in...

    Hotel rooms rather than hostels?

We solved that problem with a couple of things. After letting the clothes drip for a few minutes above the tub, we squeezed out what water that we could, rolled them up in the towel and wrung them. After that, we used a length of paracord and binder clips to hang the clothes up. Sometimes is...

    Married Pilgrims

I understand your extraneous reply but I'm curious: Can you understand why a married man, who has never walked a Camino, might ask the question that he did?

    Married Pilgrims

Of course there are separate sleeping arrangements for married couples. You each get your own bunk bed! Usually, you'll get assigned one up and one down so that you can be close. :p Actually, some private albergues have private rooms but, of course, they cost more. I think the going rate for...

How much cash should i bring

That's not true. Most European banks issue cards with 4 digit codes but their ATMs are smart enough to get your bank to verify your PIN number, whether it has 4, 6 or 32 digits. What Europeans do with their debit cards has nothing to do with bank customers or debit cards in the rest of the world.

    Any Recent ATM/Money Issues

My six digit PIN with my BoA card worked getting money out of the ATM at Liber_bank yesterday. I still haven't found a bank that tries to stop me entering all six digits or doesn't let me withdrawal funds.

Deutsche Bank ATM and BNP ATM on the Camino

I realize that you are repeating this advice in good faith but it just isn't true. I have always used my 6 digit PIN cards in Spain and Italy without any problem. I used my BoA US card in a Duetsche Bank ATM in Bilbao just last week. Please help to let that old advice die a natural death.

    Any Recent ATM/Money Issues

I have used whatever bank ATM was available and convenient. I won't need to take out money again soon but in a week or two, I'll try my Singapore card with something other than Deutsche Bank. I'll report back how it goes.
