    Upper back pain

I develop the same upper back pain after few days of walking. I now have my pack transported. And carry a day pack.

PLEASE HELP! last minute decision/opportunity to do the camino.. in 9 days!

Have you had any winter hiking experience before? In addition to gear suggestions above, I would recommend taking "kahtoola microspikes". They are mini crampons for hiking (not mountaineering). I hate slipping and falling in icey/snowly trails, specially over uphill/downhill. I am sure they...

    Knee Health

Hi Bob, Yes, poles, knee strap, exercise, supplements all would help. But, one thing that is guaranteed to help not only your knees but your entire body, that is a maximum cushioned hiking shoes, like the Hoka one Tor tech mid. I am in my late 50's on the heavier side. Walked two Caminos with...

@Nanc Great to see you are managing the Camino challenges.... Keep walking. Are you wearing the Hoka Bondi? How is that holding up?

Great Tom, as long as you tested the setup and it worked for you thats the most important thing. Buen Camino.

Bedding and rain gear decision questions

I walked the Frances around the same time. Only had a liner and not warm enough and i had to pick up a lightweight sleeping bag in Pamplona (700g). I sleep cold btw. I took a technical shell and a sleeveless tarp poncho, The shell serves as a light rain jacket, as a windbreaker/insulation layer...

    Great story.

LIVE from the Camino Route dilemma

I have walked both in off peak times. I would choose the Norte over Frances any time for its stunning diversity; rugged country trails, challenging coastal ascents and stunning sandy beaches. What else? northern cuisine of course. Although you are starting in peak times, Norte will be less...

    Camino is a no go

As the saying goes...."bitter trials are often blessings in disguise"....Imagine if this would have happened while you were on the trail...Camino will still be there. You now have a strong motivation to recuperate and plan your next attempt.

Camino Norte, or Camino Frances (again)?

Andy, This site lists alberques/pensions/hostels with prices .... per stage. you can get a good idea on the current costs.... http://www.gronze.com/camino-norte

Camino Norte, or Camino Frances (again)?

Wifi is everywhere is Spain. Normally, when i arrive at a hostel, take a shower and book my next stages. If you want to secure cheaper accommodation, i think you have to book at this peak time. You can take a chance, start walking very very early to arrive early so that you have a bed at cheaper...

Camino Norte, or Camino Frances (again)?

Most of the 20 stages or so from the start are highly touristic, but definitely the most popular spots. My suggestion would be to try and book a hostel/alberque that exclusively target pilgrims as your 1st choice. Here is where you will pay the least. Once you move to general hostels or...

Camino Norte, or Camino Frances (again)?

I had the same dilemma. Chose the Norte for more physical challenge and the ocean views. Norte has more uphill (rolling hill) walking specially the 1st week (Irun - Bilbao). Although weather can be unpredictable, July/August should be warmer. I walked in June and had only few days of rain at...

    My Camino Begins

If you are lucky no rain in September. Weather can be unpredictable in northern Spain. Expect rain at least in Galicia. A poncho and rain pants would be practical if you don't like getting too wet. I always walk in shorts and put my rain pants during sustained rain. Poncho covers my pack and 2/3...

    My Camino Begins

Wow that is what i call training. Camino is going to be a walk in the park for you. List looks Great. Don't see a poncho? Assume you are relying on the rain jacket! I prefer ponchos during long rainy days... Wish i have your weight loss problem though, haha. Have done two Caminos. Will loose...

Camino Frances July-Aug...questions from a newbie!

If you are a city walker, backpacking is another world altogether. 3 wks seems enough to cover your chosen sections. For a first timer you might want to stick to the Frances. While the Camino is not a very difficult mountain hike, it is not a walk in the park either. There will be lot of...

LIVE from the Camino 1st week on Camino Francis May 2016

I find my body needs about one week - 10 days to fully adjust to the daily physical demand. It gets much easier afterwords. So, keep walking.

LIVE from the Camino 1st week on Camino Francis May 2016

If you are not that religious about carrying your pack, why not ship your pack ahead. You will be surprised how much relief that would be physically.

Camino Frances July-Aug...questions from a newbie!

I would recommend something hydrophobic, a lightweight windbreaker shell. You can wear those around town, at higher elevations, or when cooler in the morning, even in rain. Although not a must, a lightweight sleeping bag always gives you comfort regardless of the alberque conditions. I didn't...

    May vs September

Last time i walked from Sept 26 - Oct 31st. Best time ever. Warm but not too hot. Cooler in the mornings...Faced only few days of rain in Galicia. Not too many people until i hit Saria! Next time I would choose a week earlier, Mid sept - end of October.
