    Will the camino excitement die?

I'm writing the following without any positive or negative connotation, it's just an observation: the Camino is a cheap holiday; hiking is popular and the Caminos are included in many "top 10 of the world" lists or magazines such as National Geographic; many want to visit Spain and Portugal...

    Route Napoleon closed in winter.

I do absolutely agree that it is dangerous for the unprepared and under-equipped hikers. There are many people on this forum who do not belong to this group, just as there are many peregrinos out there who don't either. Walking over the foothills of the Pyrenees on a wide gravel track that...

    Route Napoleon closed in winter.

Instead of making fun of it, why not an actual packing list? Smart to bring in case of snow and/or apparent bad weather: Things to comfortably spend a night outside - windsack, bivi sack or 4- season tent - warm sleeping bag - sleeping pad, preferably not inflatable (cause those suck up...

    Route Napoleon closed in winter.

Seriously, there is a lot of exaggeration here. You realize that people are walking in much higher places in the Pyrenees all winter? There are open refúgios for mountaineers on over 2.000m and there are loads of people around. Some of my friends camp out in the Pyrenees in winter. Don't...

    Pokemon stops on the Camino?

Of course there are. All those cities and villages you walk though are not sacred places that exist for you only. Spain is just a regular European country, people live in all these places and many of them play pokemon, search for geocaches or whatever you find unfitting.

Two pilgrims lost and found in SJPP-Roncesvalles

Seems like a case of bad preparation, no map, no GPS, no phone, no idea. Hard to even walk for such a long time without meeting people or getting to a street/trail marker...

Camino Frances for the month of August or Dec 15-Jan....

When it comes to walking in winter, the question is if you are familiar with hiking in coldish weather and possibly even a bit of snow. That's the main safety relevant thing to think about. You should be comfortable in being out in nature with not so perfect weather.

Is a guide book really necessary????

That sounds interesting :) is it a Camino guidebook?

Is a guide book really necessary????

I'm currently writing two guidebooks for the German speaking market, so I have to object. There is still a need for one source that you can trust and follow throughout your trip. Books don't have to be heavy and bulky but can be a faithful companion in your pocket that gives you advice beyond...

    Massage

Technically it's illegal to charge for services without getting registered or paying tax? Or am I wrong? You might take clients away from the established local service providers.

Camino Frances - lite and fast ?!

I think it sounds like a fun idea if you are interested in such a challenge. The advantage about the Camino Francés is that it has such a tight network of accommodation and supplies that you can walk no problem with a very light pack. The terrain is pretty easy, but I can't even imagine...

Hi, I saw dolphins in Finisterre, but I don't remember the name of the beach the dolphins were in.

Well, the dolphins aren't stuck around just one beach. I used to surf a lot around there and saw them on more than one occasion on Praia do Mar de Fora and the beaches further north, towards Muxía (Nemiña) etc. Even found a dolphin skeleton on the beach there once- quite scary since it looked...

LIVE from the Camino Musings on our morality, live from SdC

This is maybe a hot topic, but a lot of beggars from some Eastern European countries are apparently victims of human trafficking. Some criminal organizations do search for people with disabilities or missing limbs and promise them a better future in another country. Next thing they know, they...

    LIVE from the Camino Help!!

The help you need is most likely at a doctor's office. I would recommend going to the emergency room for some stronger painkillers and a proper examination.

Santiago Airport-trekking poles and checked bags

It's not the airlines making these decisions, nor the airport. The ICAO made rules and regulations, published by IATA, are valid for all of civil aviation. Of course different employees may still eventually imply slightly different rules. But metal poles are considered a potential threat and...

Loads of snow at O Cebreiro!

It's a very warm sleeping bag, becuase I also use it outside (in Portugal) at this time of the year. I can definitely recommend it- really cheap and good quality. (I didn't pay nearly as much as indicated in the link) Mountain Equipment Classic Women's 750 Extreme:-30°C/-22°F Comfort...

Loads of snow at O Cebreiro!

Thank you! Your experience sounds actually really interesting, well, besides the fact of being a soldier. These days, with proper equipment, long distance cross country skiing and camping north of the polar circle are quite popular. Kungsleden (400km) and Nordkalottleden (800km) are two good...

Loads of snow at O Cebreiro!

The public albergues in O Cebreiro, Triacastela and Sarria were all open, well populated and heated. The one in Pereje was an exception. We called them beforehand, so we were prepared for the lack of warmth.

Loads of snow at O Cebreiro!

Here's some pictures I took earlier this week: http://imgur.com/a/ItiC4 If you don't like the cold: avoid higher altitudes! If you fancy walking through the winter wonderland: now is the time to go!
