Falcon269, "statistics" are often misleading, which is why one tends to call them similar to lies.;)
The SJPP figures are up, but there is no such "growth" on the camino afterwards. As a matter of fact, and compared to last year, less pilgrims said to have started from towns such as Pamplona...
Yes, the alternative caminos are "picking up speed". However, the Frances until Sarria is consistently seeing lower numbers (-4%). Y-t-d these were similar to those in 2011 in 2012.
The Sarria - Santiago lap of the Frances saw numbers increased by 11% compared to last year, and now represent...
The answers are already given (above). What might be a concern, particularly on hot days with lots of perspiration, are some "suero oral" (serum) confections, which you can buy at farmacias (pharmacies, drugstores) and solve in water.
Interesting figures from SJPP. Thank you Falcon269.
I elaborated a bit on these and compared with the following:
In Saint Jean Pied de Port, the number of pilgrims recorded in 2017 were 57.295, (58’953 in 2016, 54’647 in 2014 and 54’218 in 2014). Whilst there was an increase of 8% in 2016...
It is so easy to ask politely if a toilet (restroom) may be used. In some places one has to pay or consume something, sometimes obtain a key for access. The general rule is to be considerate of somebody else's property and care.
The following website, in Spanish, might be of help to mcintyre:
https://www.ibermutuamur.es/camino_santiago/accesible/inicio/inicial.htm
It has details of the Frances from Roncesvalles to Santiago which may be useful.
A few years ago I had the opportunity to assist a small group of physically impaired people from Sarria to Santiago. We were "caracoles" (snails), averaging 7 kms a day. As Falcon269 mentions, certain parts of the trail have to be circumvented. A public organization in A Coruña publishes a...
Hi Caminomarie, welcome to the Forum. You have many questions, to which the answers are available on searching the large experiences of other caminantes. In the top right corner "search" you can enter each doubt and you'll see loads of answers. Buen Camino!
Statistically 45% of arrivals who walked the Camino Francés started in Sarria, with another 6% from Cebreiro. Of these walkers, more than half are Spanish. Thus it is obvious that during Spanish holidays crowds are excessive and partying galore.
Sorry folks, but there is nothing special about the weather odds during this and next month. Be prepared and inform yourselves in time at the place where you are staying for the next few days. Remember that even if it will not rain (or snow), rivers can still be overflowing and paths excessively...
From mid-May to mid June you can expect all sorts of weather conditions: sunny, hot, windy, rainy, cold, etc. conditions depending upon the area and which don't last long. Be prepared. Check the daily/weekly forecasts on www.aemet.es for the area (town, province) you will walk through.
When Annakappa walked with me the Frances from Roncesvalles to Santiago in 2007, she insisted to be a "pilgrim". At the bottom of this message our YouTube presentation will say it all.
What we didn't tell, is that on an odd occasion we had to use somebody's 'phone (at a bar, restaurant, or...
Astorga-Rabanal is a good start, not too difficult or too long a walk. Staying at Refugio Gaucelmo (CSJ) is quite an experience. The following day, steep up to Foncebadon and then along mountain range to Cruz de Ferro. After that, basically down all the way, sometimes pretty steep, past Manjarin...
It might be worth your while to rent a place in or near O’Cebreiro from September to April and bundle the experience(s) in your dreams. Then listen to old Hilton’s advice “location, location, location”
It's the benefit of the doubt and an honest explanation which will maybe avoid unpleasant treatment by people who have lost their life line by the current fires.
